It sounds like you guys plan on using used pistons. Obviously not ideal, but it should last a while with a hone and new rings. By the time you buy the internals and new rings, bearings, seals/gaskets, and machine work, you'll be pretty close to the price of an s52...
Yes, that's true. I actually picked up a beat to shit S52 with plans to rebuild, but happened across the M54 pistons and bought BNIB rings for a reasonable price. I also had the 84mm bore block around at the time (NV modded to handle dual knock sensors).

I had the bores honed up (they were within spec otherwise), the S52 head rebuilt with new guides and seals, and the crank/pistons installed for a very reasonable price as well. I've also ended up replacing every timing component, and wear item on the motor (I would have done this on the S52 as well).

I had kind of a perfect storm of parts that led to the stroker. I don't think I'll ever pick up an S52 at this point, I'll ride this swap out until I can build a forged turbo motor.

    Thanks for your insight!

If you do some looking around and are a little patient, you can find the M54B30 rotating at a reasonable price. Same goes for the M50B25. Not including the other parts that'll be replaced while doing the swap (i.e. steering rack), I'll be WELL below the price of a used S52. And I'll have a minty fresh stroked M50. We're all aware that the S52 was an option, but for me, the thrill of building an 3.0 M50 stroker, with all new parts, was more appealing, even if it meant "sacrificing" a little power.

          sacrificing?

i agree 100%. the peace of mind i will have along with the power gains, and bragging factor make it on my to-do winter project list.

it will likely see boost in another year(when i find another e30 to be my DD and turn the vert into a weekend roadster).

found s52 crank for 300, s50 cams for 200, and should be able to get the m54 pistons and what not for 2-300. 200 dr. vanos thing(while in there why not). and another 2-300 for misc. stuff IE valve springs, retainers, piston rings, HG, ect.

          so my goal: 3.0 m50/s50 cams/22lb injectors/custom tune/3.25LSD.

          should be fun lol

ok so i am buying my cams/s50 valve springs/new vanos soon along with bigger injectors and a tune, curious if i will need a retune when i stroke it to 3.0 with the m54 rotating assembly. i dont think i would...but not sure, hence why i ask.

anyway i hope to take my 1/4 from 14.90 to 14.2-14.4 with cams and under 14.00 after stroking to 3.0(setting my expectations low so i can get excited when something awesome happens lol)

I think anytime you change a major variable, like displacement, a retune would be smart

I also have a turbo kit ready to go on it. and boost 15psi on the street.. What should I expect? does anyone have a boosted setup like this?

" WHY DO YOU NEED 300HP TO DO THE SPEED LIMIT?"

Bringing this thread back with a question about cams for my NV-3.0L stroker. Has anyone run Schrick cams with a 3.0L stroker? And if so, did you deck the block at all when you did a rebuild (assuming you did rebuild the motor)? And what head gasket did you run?

Ultimately I'm trying to figure out how much clearance I'll have running a non-vanos 3.0L stroker, on a block that's had 7 thousandths taken off, using an oversized OEM head gasket. Found a steal of a deal on a set of Schrick cams that I'd like to run on this set-up. Thanks

There's a cheaper alternative, M50B20 cams are more aggressive than m3 cams but are from a Non Vanos so they are "bolt-on"

Really? Never knew that, I'll look into it. Thanks

Mostly just concerned about valve/piston contact. Generally it's never good...

                            Is the m50 is NV?
