ok tried a brand new interstate battery, same thing. load tested my optima, 12.7v still good. im guessing my wiring is screwed up or possibly a relay? maybe im missing a ground somewhere? i know the 3 wires on the starter are correct and the starter itself is good; its brand new and it starts up everytime right after i get it running. when i get the no start problem it really feels like the starter isnt getting enough power. the wiring harness came from a 92 325is auto if that helps..
so my car wont start.. but wait!

Hah wow, I had the same exact problem on my 240. One day after re-grounding everything , the problem stopped. I haven't had a problem since (~ 6 months).Comment

grrrr. i knew i was missing something. i have the ground from the pass motor mount arm to the body. what other grounds were there? tranny to body, starter to body? i might just ground everything lol1991 318is nv m50 : brilliantrotComment

If the problem is intermittent like that, the problem is usually more electrical rather than mechanical.
