I finally answered my own question by installing an OBD2 cam sensor with a gender-changed plug in my M50. It ran fine. The only difference between the OBD1 cam sensor and OBD2 is the gender of the plug. Change it from male to female and it will be fine. Save the $60.

A gender change is still legal, just don't let the two males get together, at least in California.

Pictured are an original OBD1 cam sensor (90 degree plug) and the one I changed the plug on (straight). Also an OBD1 solenoid with the wire and OBD2 with the plug on the solenoid.

Interesting. Figured they would be different somehow. Very tricky of bmw to make em all universal but w/ new plug so you gotta get the expensive ones.
