The Getrag and ZF ratios are nearly identical.

I have a 4.10 diff now (worked perfect at Road Atlanta, a 3.91 might have been better at Watkins Glen with more track time). I want to go to a 4.45 with a 6 speed.

Dont know why he would bring that up in a topic about the 5 speed, and even then the 6 speed ratios are the same as the 5 speed minus the last gear. You would be blasting through all 5 gears just city driving with a 4.10.

I was talking E36 trannies. It is my understanding that the Zf and Getrag ratios are so similar that they are interchangable.

there is the miscommunication, all other references to getrag's in this thread are referring to the getrag 260 from the e30 325, not e36 getrag

i would look for a 3.46 though, or even 3.25..

I have a ZF and have tried 3.46 and 2.93. I'm much happier with 2.93 because I do mostly commuting. And even still, the 2.93 is fun and fast. When I had the 3.46 in it felt too high strung. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who would expects to be on the highway. It's really only suited best for around town or auto-crossing. I was using 5th gear in town at 40-50 mph. 80 mph was roughly 4000 RPMs.

yep the e36 trannies (g250/zf310/320) have simular ratios, but the e30 getrag 260 has 4th 1:1 and an overdrive

That's fine if you have a 6 speed, just pop it into 6th on the freeway/highway and enjoy better gas milage. The main reason I want a 6 speed, is to run a torquier rear end, while maintaining my current milage. I don't mind a little more shifting.

I was looking to see what the E36 was using for a rear gear because I doubt anyone likes cruising at 70mph at 3200-3400rpm. Gets old pretty quick. Is there a noticable drop in acceleration when dropped to a 2.93?

2.93 is the stock diff unless it was an m3, then it was a 3.25. There will be a small drop, but if you do alot of highway then it will be worth it.

I have an M50 non-vanos as well. I tried 3.46 and changed to 2.93, my preference. Sure, you'll notice a little drop going 3.25 to 2.93, but like Uber E30 said, if you drive any highway miles it'll be worth it. The M50 non-vanos pulls quite strong at high RPMs, where I've found it's most fun because you get to spend a little more time in each gear taking advantage. With my 3.46, the short bursts in each gear used to be fun, but it got old driving like this every day.
