M50 non vanos swap into 318

    Alright,

So I have a dilemma and suck at searching for stuff. I was driving last night and my timing chain skipped on my 318 and ate some valves. I have a non vanos m50 with ecu and harness and all the accessories.

All i've found is wiring diagrams and swaps into 325i's but no details in the swap into a 318.

    Quick questions.

Does the 318 tranny bolt upto the m50, if so do I have to change bellhousings?

    E28 M5 mounts, or E28 535i's shimmed.

Wiring doesn't seem that bad, I assume I need the engine harness from the m50 and need to make an adapter to connect it to the 318 interior harness (re pinned of course)

    Pleassssee don't flame me.

m30 motors mounts from e28, you cant change bell housing on bmw transmisions and your tranny will work basicly you have to shave your flywheel I think but I am not positive.

What if I use the M50 flywheel and clutch?

              Mmm good call. Thanks

Anyone else know what else I need. I have an electric fan so I guess I can use the 318 rad.

yes 318 trans, you can use either the m50 flywheel or the m20 flywheel/m20 starter and a 323 TO bearing. Yes you use the 318 rad.

Are the M50 and M20 single mass flywheels the same?

And E36 throw out bearing right?

Another question. Does the m30 mounts twist the engine? And if they do, what do I do for a tranny crossmember?

You need to custom fab a tranny brace and use e36 motor mounts arms with it.

No, M50 are dual Mass Flywheel.
Don't forget to mate the starter with the flywheel.
Use the throwout bearing from what ever clutch u are using.

I guess I should clarify what I want to do. And let you guys tell me if it's possible.

I want to swap the M50 non vanos into a 91 318is using the 318 tranny and stock driveshaft. I don't care what clutch I have to use or if I have to get it machined. I also don't mind making a tranny cross member as long as thats all I have to do, I don't want to make a shift rod, but if I really have to I will.

You can keep your tranny and driveshaft.

Use the search button. All of this has been coverd so many times.

                            I recently swaped a m52 into a 91 318is here is what I used.

Stock 240 gear box witch bolts right up. With solid mounts. (you don't need to make a different cross member mount for the 240 trans)

Stock m52 clutch, with the stock 240 TO bearing.

The 535I motor mounts no shims.

                            Shortened the drive shaft 2.5".

                            Shortened the shifter linkage 2".

I have no fan yet, but have not driven much.

                            What else?

Shortening drive shafts is expensive as fuck.

If I use a M20 tranny is it any different, or does the 318 use the same tranny as the 325?
