    Exhaust Options.... what is quiet?

I am running an s52 in my e30 with factory manifolds into a backyard hack-job exhaust system.

Question: what is the best pipe diameter for a single pipe from manifolds back? Any muffler or resonator recommendations?

I want the car to be QUIET. Can I run single 2.5 inch pipe from the exhaust manifolds (well after the manifolds come together in a Y) back to a muffler through a 2.5 inch resonator?

Yes, 2.5" is fine for an S52. Personally, something like a nice catalyst, a 16" resonator, and a Borla ProXS would probably fit the bill. Would likely give a slightly louder sound than a stock S52 powered car. To achieve factory type quiet a factory type muffler is a good way to go.

I probably have one of the quietest setups I have been in. Still enough of a exhaust note while driving, but really quiet. Raceland headers->Ypipe->2.5" magnaflow cat->borla xs mid can->vibrant ultra quiet muffler

I used an E36 system for the exhaust from the headers to the cats. (I used the modifications documented in Zionsville Autosports Project Orca.) After the cats, i attached a Z3 muffler and pipes. It is nice and quiet and sounds good to me.
