    S52 swap no crank

Hi guys, just finished my s52 swap into my 318. The problem is the starter won’t crank, the solenoid clicks and lights dim but starter won’t turn over. If I jump the starter positive post, the car starts ok. Kassel did the wiring and and flashed the ECU. The 318 was a manual car before the swap but did not had a clutch safety switch. EWS deleted. Any ideas?

EWS won't stop the car from cranking. You can crank without an ECU even plugged in. The crank signal that goes to the solenoid comes straight from the ignition switch, which also trips the unloader relays to dim the lights. This signal provides 12v to the solenoid terminal on the starter when cranking.

If you're saying that the car cranks when you provide 12v to the solenoid with a jumper but it only clicks which you crank with the key, that definitely sounds like a wiring issue on the vehicle side. First make sure that the solenoid is actually clicking though, and it's not just the unloader relays. If the solenoid is clicking but it won't crank, it sounds almost like it's not getting enough current for some reason.

Anyway, this is a fairly simple circuit, study the ETM for your vehicle and probe around with a multimeter to make sure you're getting 12v at the right places when cranking, you should be able to figure it out.

Yes this happened to me as well, It was something with the grounds of the starter. The wires that were attached to the starter were in the wrong position, so I switched them and it cranked. Hope this helps.

I've always found this diagram of the starter very helpful:

red should be hot from the battery, direct line. Green/black is unloader relay for later model cars. Yellow/black is starter/key on solenoid. to quickly test, just jump the yellow black terminal to the red terminal. This should work as long as the starter is grounded directly or the engine is grounded to the power source.
