S54 into E36: http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=282021
Basically, search bimmerforums, m3forum, or r3v for threads by/included Alex L./M3 Euro LTW. He is making a plug and play kit for the S54 -> E30/E36 swap. www.abloriginalparts.com
Hope that helps!
(By cosmetic, I am being a bit picky, I'd like to re-mount my reservoir so its straight, and to do that I have to move the battery post from the OBD-I location to the side wall. I've got the factory parts in, just haven't moved the post yet. Also, I ran a blue silicone hose from the reservoir, and it stands out as a non-oem looking part.... stupid, but its sometimes nice to pay attention to details like that for appearance sake.)
I bought 20 feet of the black silicone hose so I can supply short runs to people and they won't have to buy bulk. This should get 5-7 people started if they don't use the E46 reservoir in a stockish location with the factory hose and its connectors. (nothing wrong with that)
You can't beat the "look" of the S50B30 and S50B32 in terms of looking right under the E30 hood. But there is no denying that the S54 brings on a new level of power and torque. Its not a perfect motor however, and buying just the engine and its dme doesn't allow for "drop it in, turn it on" the way the S50's can be done.
As you read in the forums, you'll find many standalone solutions which can be extremely flexible, powerful, and adjusted locally to your specific needs, and offer additional features such as traction control, data logging, launch etc.... stuff you'll never see on a factory dme re-flash for transplant. On the other hand, a factory reflash will be very sweet in terms of everyday drive-ability. It may or may not restrict you to HFM use, and it may or may not be tunable, certainly there are tons of restrictions built into the dme that preclude complete control the way a standalone allows.
The factory HAD to pass emissions first, it HAD to have good fuel economy, and lastly, they tuned to make the best power under those first two considerations. Without the first two taken into account, they can't sell the street car at all. There is just too much code in there to really optimize for DE/Track in many people's opinions.....
Have fun reading and researching, that is the fun part!
