    p0500 code/VSS question

Did anyone else run into having ECU throw SES light with p0500? My speedometer works fine, and I haven't had any issues with the E30 diff mounted VSS.
Obviously we can't just retrofit the E46 M3 rear wheel sensor (well..easily anyway).
If I clear p0500 I get it back the next time I start the car. My ABS system is functioning perfectly, I can rev all the way to 8k, car drives great otherwise.
I use ultragauge (similar to torque) and when connected to OBDII port it does not seem to receive any speed signal, but does read rpm appropriately.

    What am I missing here?
On a (possibly?) related note, I also have p0012 that I can't get rid of. This seems to point to either VANOS solenoid (will get the Beisan one on order), or intake cam position sensor, which I replaced when I rebuilt the engine with a new unit that currently has ~2000 miles on it, so it can't be that

My ECU is from an S54 Z3M I believe. That is what the VIN provided through my OBDII port decodes as

How was your wiring done? How was your ECU coding done? ECU coding needs to be done to properly factor the correct VSS Signal and it obviously needs to be wired properly at C101.

IIRC The Z3 is already coded to use the 9 pulse signal like the E30 has. Either way, that needs to be turned on, and the K factor adjusted (although that is more minor).

I'm using Andrew's harness that plugs into C101. Any particular wire or connection I can look for or double check to make sure it is correct?

As far as the coding, I had a local shop in Dallas do the tuning, so I'm not sure exactly what they did regarding VSS signal. Only issue now is I am in Houston for another month for work and left my OBD2 usb cable in Dallas too :/

So if E30 uses a 9 pulse signal, and so does the Z3M, what exactly needs to be adjusted on the K factor? Is that not just if the pulses are different ie E30 and E46?

Did they delete EWS? I doubt they did much else.

The rolling diameter is different on the E30. I usually use the factor from the cluster - 7784. A little optimistic but close enough.

Yes EWS was deleted, the car runs and drives for ~1800 miles. Admittedly I've never driven or even seen another S54 E30 in person so I don't have anything to compare it to

              E36Z3 doesnt use 9 tooth. Uses 48 just like OBD2 E36...

I'm getting 62168355008 for the speed sensor for a 2002 S54 Z3M, which is listed as the same speed sensor for the E30
Admittedly I haven't seen the inside of many Z3 diffs but the pics I have seen show the 9 spline ring just like E30 has.

I guess I'm just confused as to what needs to be changed in the coding, as the physical VSS sensor is the same part, which reads a similarly splined (but different length spline?) ring inside the diff

Speed sensor itself isnt problem. Its wiring/ECU flash. You can give ecu the 9 tooth but you have to tell it thats what youre doing. its expecting the 48 tooth signal from the ABS module.

that's what I couldn't remember. Either way you can set it to use the 9 tooth signal instead of the DSC generated one.
