    Strut Housing???

Some how when removing the strut cartridge, the outter housing stayed and the internials came out and it is stuck. I got PB Blaster in there but no luck. After talking to the local dealer they said not to use heat because the steal is tempered and heating it cause it to lose it's strength. Any ideas on how to remove it with-out too much damage to the threads? Thanks

we had the same problem with mine last week...my buddy tackled the task by using alot of wd40, a grinder, and just slowly working that inner sleeve out by pounding on a chisel. it finally started breaking loose and the thread eventually backed out.

I had a pipe wrench on there when it broke. The PB Blaster is slowly working in there, but I was wondering if you could cut these off at the base and take a pair of non ix cut them down to the same size and weld them on?

I was trying a chisel and broke it (blue-point junk). how did you get a grinder in there? I have a small die grinder, but it only goes about 6" in there. Thanks

i only used a grinder to get to where you are at. i didnt have to go that far with it...for us, it was all about just being patient...a whole lot of pounding and it was pretty frustrating breaking all the rust loose. yours looks like the oil in the housing dried and hardened up pretty bad.

maybe you can cut the housing in half, but not the strut...then work the strut out, and then weld it back together with a good bead. good luck. youll get it

tubes are the same up to, so yes you could cut and weld one from another housing.

still, it would probably be worth trying to get it out without damaging it.

Yikes. That is one CORRODED strut housing, so much so that I would try to weld on another unmolested strut top due to the amount of missing metal and the depth of the corrosion, as long as the base of the housing is in better shape.

I seriously doubt that a strut tube is heat treated. It's probably made of a medium grade of carbon steel for excellent weldability and ease of machining.

Buy two new strut housings. That is really really bad. Its just not worth trying to reuse that.

I know you have an ix, and I know thats hard to find, but it would be soooo dangerous to drive on that. Over half of the metal is gone. It is less than half as strong as new.

I looked on real oem today and the Threaded ring with external thread M48X1,5 (strut bolt) has the same part # as the non-ix so I will look for a set of good non's and see if I can weld them on. Real oem say's like $1100 for new onesouch!!! In the meantime I will try to get this one out, if anybody has a good idea on how to remove this one or a good set of ix's for sale let me know. Thanks in advance.

I got that strut cartridge out. Drilled a hole in the bottom, put it in the 30 ton press and pop. The first socket went through the cartridge so I went to a 1 in hole. Then welded the hole shut with a washer.
