i have an auto 2 door 1990 325ix. Have been having problems what sounds like the rear end. As I start to accelerate i can her a grinding towards the rear of the car. When I reverse the noise and even worse with a clunking(car seems to almost skip), and the same when I try to go up inclines. When i get to 50 mph it goes away, just acceleration, and hills and reverse it acts up. I have a complete donor car, was told i needed to chage cv axle in the rear, did that car runs the same. Now my BMW mechanic is saying it is my rear drive shaft, which my guess would be a U-joint. I removed the complete rear drive train from my donor car, just wanted to know if anyone else has had this problem with the ix? If anyone could shed some light id appreciate it, and if you need a part for this model of car let me know. Donor car is an 88 325 ix, thanks.

you'd think a U-joint wouldn't improve at highway speeds. Have not had the problem, but you should be ableto isolate it to the U-Joint by seeing excessive play in it if it is the problem. I don't know what the sounds are when a rear diff starts having problems. But would expect grinding and binding of some sort. At least you have donor parts to control the outcomes!

there's about a 90% chance your front driveshaft splines are stripped
pull the front shaft and inspect. if they're bad, you need to check for damage in the mating gear from the transfercase - if that's damaged you have to replace the gear and the shaft. if only the shaft is bad you can replace that.
order some molykote BR2-plus grease and give it all a good smear before you put it back together. most front driveshaft failures are due to improper or failed lubrication of the splines.
