Bad CV joint. What are the options?

I have a bad front right CV joint judging from the beautiful clunk I get when turning the wheels, so I am wondering.. Can I rebuild it myself and save some money?

What has likely failed and is a rebuild even possible?

Dude the fix can be done on the cheap by taking your axels off and going to a car parts shop, they will take urs as a core and give you a refurbish one in exchange. You can also buy the repair kit from BMW about $140 for 3 with the BMWCCA discount and repair it urself

Every place I looked that even had ix axles wanted $700 - $1000. I just found some parts online and put mine together.

I don't know if cart parts is a national chain but here in NJ we have them and they do offer that service, I also think TurnerMotorsport does the same as well

I would spend $20 on some boot kits and repack the bearings first. Unless they've been damaged somehow (running with broken boots for thousands of miles, hit with something, etc), the CV's themselves will last virtually forever. It's also possible the clunk isn't the CVs.

I'm from the Philippines with an iX so it pays to be resourceful to maintain this very rare BMW (1 of 3 in my country); I just spent about $10 for parts.

I bought a set of ball bearings(6) and had them installed and repacked with axle grease. The vendor measured one of the stock bearings with a caliper (23/32) and was able to find an exact match (NSK, a japanese brand).

But the clunking sound you are referring to might be a ball joint ( tie rods or control arm outer ball joint). A bad CV joint is usually caused by lack of lubrication(old grease) that destroys a bearing due to metal to metal contact; the sound is more of a grinding sound (bits and pieces of bearing) rather than a clunk.

Yes, Here in NJ we have a chain called Autopart International. They will buy yours as acore and sale you a rebuilt front axel. They deal with strickly Euro cars and Euro parts
