I'm getting a pretty violant vibration @ certain speeds on the hway...

Happened this morning on my way to work. Was cruising around 60-65mph, under a little acceleration, the car started vibrating like crazy. Almost like i was driving on rumble strips. I let off the throttle, and it slowly went away, and came back. Anyone know what the potential problem could be?

I think it may be the lower u joint in the steering. Mine does this sometimes too. Is it the steering wheel that is vibrating uncontrollably?

yeah the steering wheel, but the vibration can be felt through the entire car. Almost like its about to explode. lol. it kind of starts off as a hum, followed by the vibration. Then it goes away.

Hmm, mine sounds like something knocking around on the end of the steering column, but you can't feel the whole car shake.

First thing I'd check is the guibo. There are other possibilities that are less happy.

Some times if your steering components have worn out joints the wheels will wobble at certain speeds. You might check and see if anything has play in it.

i just replaced my axle boots & tie rods over the wkend and had an alignment done yesterday. Everything seemed tight when i was underneath the car.

I would say either guibo or driveshaft. I've got the same thing on my '89 ix and am in the process of removing the exhaust and driveshaft. I've also got to take the transfer case out and put in a new VC, so it's gonna be down for a while.

so i got underneath, and the guibo is fine, no cracks or shreddings. I removed the plastic cover that covered the driveshaft, and saw this. Are the splines supposed to sit out like this?

Yeah, the splines should stick out about that far. It is most likely your rear driveshaft, guibo, or the rubber mount from the transfer case to the frame. Or a combination of the three.
