    jack test fail

i just bought a project ix so one of the first things i did was the jack test and the front wheels wouldnt move at all whille the back wheels spun
what is the cost to rebuild a tc because i have a parts car with one that i could send away to a shop
also the parts car had a working tc when i got it but i drove it from texas to virginia with different sized tires(hate all you want for that i deserve it)
so how quickly do they burn out

and any one have a 5 speed with a working tc theydont want
or a auto tc that works

Just means your transfer case is shot.

No idea on the rebuild cost. Someone else will chime in on that.

$900 for a new VC. not that bad to replace, but definitely not easy.

driving any significant difference with mismatched tires will def kill it..

another option is a good used t-case, but that's a crap shoot. I'd bet half of all ix's have non-working VCs because of doing stuff like towing on two wheels or mismatched tires, and running the fluid dry.

um.. not really, you can drain the fluid and see if there is a seperation of red atf and a milky white fluid but its pretty uncommon to actually see that, its a sign the silicone fluid has leaked out of the clutch pack. Jack test is the only "real" way to kindof test if it's still working.

+1 to nando's price quote. I recently went through months of pricing out options to fix my failed transfer case. The rebuild cost comes to about 1k in just parts. Used "working" t-cases are getting really hard to get ahold of, especially manual trans cases. Seems the clutch pack seals fail around 160-180k miles.

Best price for a VC that I found when I purchased mine was www.ddmtuning.com

              $639.57 currently

Allow 2-3 weeks for shipping, fyi, as they tend to be slow in that regard.

              Part # is 27241226401

                thank you.

Not a reliable way. I had two on the bench side by side, measured rotating resistance on each (with a front driveshaft and dial torque wrench) both were very close and one was good and the other kaput.

So I say no, in this case jack really does know something.

i talked to multiple bmw technicians, all of which said there is no way to test the transfer case out of the vehicle.

                    What was your test setup?
I had a transmission shop tell me recently that they reliably bench test viscous transfer cases for all kinds of vehicles.

I know I have a good TC and want to test it on the bench to compare.

I have seen the one transmission shops use. It's just on the vc out of the tc. My test was not an exact science, but should have got me close.

I tested the vc's while still in the tc's which would not be as exact because of bearing, gear, and chain resistence being different.

With the tc on the bench I put in the front driveshaft, then locked it in place. Put a 30mm thin walled socket on the output rear shaft with a dial torque wrench (dial or beam type should work) and watched for the torque number at which the shaft started to turn.

The numbers were close, but one was good and one was bad.
Maybe the fault was in the manner of my test, but I used all the same equipment to test them?
