    clutch???

Hi guys. The other day I had my windows down, and everytime I put the car in neutral and let out of the clutch, It sounds like something lightly grinding or rattling. But once I put in the clutch it stops. Flywheel out of balance? Im not sure what it is.

P.S. the sound is very faint but noticable when in the car.

Most likely the throw out bearing. I was told that every e30, including my IX has that noise after any amount of milage on the clutch assembly. Not to be worried, as it will run like that forever. He said you will know when its about to sieze/go out as you will feel the engine pulses through the clutch pedal, in which case you may have a mere couple of miles before it goes out completely and strands you. I've been driving mine with that noise for about 40k miles. Same thing, rattle when in neutral, and as soon as the clutch pedal is pushed in, or is in gear, it gets quiet.

      or layshaft bearing

You may be able to silence it if you increase your idle a bit...

also, try to change your tranny oil. good policy anyway I guess if you haven't done that in a while.

thanks guys. Its just the Getrag rattling. When I pull the motor next month Im replacing the clutch, throwout bearing, input and output shaft seals and will do a tranny flush for good measure. Hopefully that will cure the rattle.

Thanks idanity I will def use that when I do replace it! I have a new issue. When going in reverse, I brake and engage the clutch to shift to 1st. As I engage the clutch it makes a loud pop sound, and it seems like it happens when I apply breaks in that situation. It has me thinking a throw out bearing but I'm kinda scared my driveshaft splines are worn.

Do the pivot pin too. Its most likely worn out. A lot of people over look it.

MMM doubtful, if there was pilot bearing issues it would making noise all the time.

Im gonna go with the kit he suggested from bavauto. Its the best price deal Ive found for a clutch kit.
