    Another ix bites the dust?

So I am camping this weekend. Driving down a bumpy road and I hear popping and clunking. I assume suspension and continue to the beach. I finish and start to leave and my brother screams ,"light them up!" I do and all I hear is screaching. It still drives fine but under any power more than a light acceleration there is a ton of popping. My brother was laying next to the car and says it is coming from the tcase. Everything feels solid, driveshafts, halfshafts etc. Just a ton of noise. I have an hour drive home tommorow.
So tcase, front driveshaft, diffs? I should say I hear no popping while coasting with clutch in which leads me to believe maybe something in the clutch. Mechanism.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that it sounds like the chain inside the transfer case has gone. I think you can still get power to the rear with a broken chain you just won't have AWD. Having said that personally I wouldn't drive it very far if at all without having it properly checked out.

Hopefully a few of the ix guru's will reply with some thoughts to help you out.....

Appears the forward output on tcase is cracked.
I am trying to get the front driveshaft out but am stuck on the centering pin.
I have the 3 bolts that were holding the shaft onto the differential off. I found a bunch of shiny washers indicating the driveshaft has been shimmed once before. So what is the easiest way to get this driveshaft off? Assuming my vc is still good, I can drive it without my front driveshaft for a bit till I figure out what to do right?

Thanks for the info, I have been unable to get the driveshaft completely out. Judging by the way it sounds though(pops only under moderate accaleration, I am pretty sure I have found the problem).

The driveshaft had already been shimmed. At the very least I am guessing a new driveshaft, but judging by the multiple cracks in the tcase output I have a feeling the car is getting scrapped. I am sick of sinking money into it and it needs alot of work yet besides this problem.

I've never seen damage like that before. It looks like it was dead before you even got it. Shimming the driveshaft is nothing more than a bandaid, the solution is basic maintenance that prevents stripped splines to begin with.

A used tc would be the cheapest repair. Good luck.

Ya, I dont see that happening. Also needs a gas tank, all new suspension all around, likely a new steering rack, and the front diff leaks. Engine is solid though. Anyway, I will try and sell the car as a complete unit I guess. Ill try and find an e or i. Everything that went wrong with this car was almost always related to the awd system. I dont even know if ill get another e30 because of the artificially inflated prices here in Canada. People are wanting $3K for absolute heaps of rusted out cars.

Anyone in Ontario need a parts car?
