You guys ready for the winter?

I've had a checklist of stuff that needed to get done before this winter, and I'm almost there.

Some of the stuff ive taken care of this month:
    -steering knuckle
-new/used shocks that were sitting in my garage for months that i finally put in
-new zimmerman rotors + EBC greenstuff pads
-hood latch (FINALLY!), thanks to Darkknight for his help on this today....was tired of using a screwdriver to open the thing
    -new Rain-X latitude wiper blades
-oil change, checked & topped off all fluids, + checked transfer case fluid level
-new Michelin Ice tires waiting to go on, still waiting for my Nogaro Silver euroweaves to come in (been waiting since July, BMWMercedesparts.com FTL)

Stuff i still need to address:
-been battling my windshield washer nozzles for yrs....sometimes they work, sometimes they barely piss anything except for the top of my hood
-need to remove my bike racks, and put my snowboard racks on for my trips up north

What's everyone's plans before the white stuff hits? I'm hoping this yr we get dumped on, b/c last yr was a big disappointment (snowboarder here)....

I have to get my transmission fluid changed. Don't really have a facility I can do it at myself right now, so I am looking around for a good deal from a shop.

Also will be looking at updating my suspension. Want to get the bilstein hd's but had a few questions about them. They are iX specific, right? And should I also be getting new springs with those? I am happy with stock ride hide, wouldnt mind lowering a few inches, but definitely want to avoid slamming.

Thanks guys, super excited to get her out in the snow/rain again. Not a ton of snow here in western wa, but the rain will be fun. Eastern wa had tons of snow and she was a beast.

I just wish i had the money to do my IX justice, but with a new baby and i'm the only one who works in the house I have neither time nor money to buy all the goodies ..
On the plus side went to the junkyard and found two e30's there , got a mint working sunroof handle that works.
Red-ish 89 325ix with dent in the door, bad paint, missing center caps, broken defrost, broken ac, p/s pump may be going, brake pad sensors missing. On the plus side i just had the trannie and tc fixed for 2 grand!!

Changing my oil from 15w-40 to 10w-40 for the winter.
Coolant change to a 65-35 mix for the cold.
        [/SIGPIC]"we are so totally screwed!"

I'm planning to do some similar projects to yourself.

I bought the car a year ago and have driven it ~3000 miles.
Things I have done within the last 2000 miles:

-Replaced drivers lock barrel so central locking and deadlock all work from drivers door
-Cleaned up the connections for the turn signals and replaced all the bulbs in the cluster.
-Replaced cracked oil pan and cleaned everything up whilst off the car
-New oil filter and redline oil
-New bilstein HD shocks all around
-New spring pads in the rear
          -New drivers side control arm
          -New control arm bushings
          -New front rotors and pads
          -replaced the aux fan switch
-refilled the R12 back up to correct level and pressure (lovely and cool now)
-Replaced differential, transfer case and transmission oils all with Redline fluids
          -Alignment
I'm sure I have forgotten something.

I'm not sure I have the money for winter tyres at the moment (3 young kids) so am planning on putting the car in the garage and working on some projects through the winter:

-I have all new coolant hoses, (Thanks Steve at Blunttech)
-and new washer nozzles sat in a box ready. Same issue as OP.
-finish cleaning up and painting the bottle cap wheels in nogaro silver for winter use

          Also planning:
          -new Tstat
-replace washer hose from nozzle to reservoir
          -new rear rotors and brakes
-inspect and replace anything needed with the handbrake. It works quite well but since the rotors will be off....
          -new steering knuckle
-new tie rod ends if the knuckle doesn't take out the small amount of play in steering.
-new passenger side control arm if the steering knuckle and tie rod ends don't fix it.
          -new muffler

Also hoping for a big snow year. (Skate skier) The last two here in Colorado have been lame.

Dude, where did you get your steering knuckle, how much, and do you have any tips for changing it?

Just bought a big tractor trailor mudflap, and some hardware, to make me some flaps.

Yup they are IX specific! If your happy with the stock height, stick w it....I had two springs that had snapped so I thought it was a good time to upgrade

I ordered the knuckle from ECS tuning. $150. Not cheap. Actually had one of my really good friends who recently opened his own shop....put it in for me while he had my axles out for new boots (he owed me a favor). I rebuilt my axles last yr and didn't have the time or patience to deal this time around with work etc. He said it was about a 15min job with the axles out....not sure how difficult it would be otherwise but it looked fairly accessible when I was diagnosing the issue initially

How everything comes apart and back together depends on whether you have an airbag or non-airbag iX. And of course nothing is easy... lol

                      Airbag

                      Non-Airbag

See the difference? Non-airbag is easier. But if you have an airbag you'll need to remove the knee bolster on the driver's side, remove 2 bolts at the flex disc under there, then unscrew the big nut on the collar with a large wrench.

Removing the actual knuckle can be tricky too. Just completely remove both bolts on either side, get a flathead screwdriver in there and pry it apart. Then use Popeye forearms to slowly wiggle everything apart.

I got my steering knuckle at bmwmercedesparts.com <<< best prices. CALL them for quick and cheap shipping too... ask for Mitch in the BMW parts dept....

How the weather's been so far, I doubt we'll even have a bad winter. 100 years ago the Hudson would freeze over and you could walk to NJ on ice. Now were lucky to even get a few inches of snow.
