Wheel hop in tight turn, ix issue?

Posting this question for my Dad, who has an ix.
He is experiencing wheel hop on dry pavement when in a tight (wheel lock) turn. His definition of wheel hop is "What a suburban wheels like when you forget to take it out of 4 wheel drive".

AFAIK Viscous diffs fail in an open position, correct? Could one have failed in a "more resistance" manner, such that it isn't allowing proper slip when in a tight turn? I'll take a look at the car next week, any ideas on what to look for or test to narrow this down?

    Thanks guys :)

i doubt one could fail in the locked position. generally, the simply overheat, the seals melt, the silicone in the vc mixes with the atf. that is pretty much it. are you sure his is bad?

both my ix's have good vc's. when i take a tight corner at slow speeds such as in a parking lot, i feel a slight binding whining noise which simply means the vc is doing its job.

I second the bad CV joint.

I've never noticed this. could alignment be an issue? even if it did bind slightly, I don't think it would feel like a 4WD with the transfercase left locked.

I think the only way a VC could fail locked is if the VC got so hot that the plates inside physically welded themselves together.

And while my Dad is a very aggressive driver, he hasn't done anything like track the car, so I doubt that is it.

I hadn't considered the CV joints, but that's a decent guess. The car has over 300K on it, so the CV joints might be due for a refresh ;)
