    transfer case question

    So I took out my front drive shaft and then my car wouldn't move until I put the front drive shaft back in but wait
    I thought you could drive without the front drive shaft in
    so is my t case going

      I thought you could drive the ix temporarily without a front drive shaft....is my new to me tcase shot

        So good news: with the front drive shaft removed you can travel SHORT distances. It is not recommended to do so as you put a lot of stress on the VC in the xcase.

        Bad news: If the xcase is worn out or broken, power will be shifted to the path of least resistance. In your case it is being shifted to the front (which has no drive shaft, hence no resistance)

        How to test: with the front driveshaft removed, have someone look under the car as you try to drive away. If xcase is shot the output flange to the front (from xcase) will just spin.

        Remember that iX xcase should rotate the rear and front as the same rate (hence the jack test)

          Without the front drive shaft I could rock the car but that's it and the front output flange just spun..on my 425$ new to me tcase....some times I hate my car

                This may be denial talking but I really trust who I bought the transfer case from so is there any way that something could be wrong with the diff or the CV axles in the rear, the car did have 250,000 miles
