Need front axle, what and where?

So Dad just sent me a picture of his front axle torn in half. Now that I'm over the speachless part, I'm trying to help him find a replacement axle.

The question with these sorts of things is always whether to go used, rebuilt, or brand new, and what the associated headaches are with each.

He called a local shop and they will replace it for $120 labor, which seems cheap enough that he could go through a number of used ones and not come close to the cost of a brand new $1100 dealer one. The car has upwards of 350K on it but is running pretty good. Cost is a consideration, as a guaranteed 100K axle a 350K bmw is perhaps asking a lot.

If you guys had to go rebuilt where would you go? Since his is literally in two pieces I'm guessing his "core" doesn't have any value?

Help me out with this and I'll post a picture of the busted axle :)

I'm looking for a Lachssilber Passenger Fender and Hood. PM if you have one or both to sell!

They pop up on here from time to time for 200-300 bucks, maybe cheaper if you're lucky. Just buy a used one, re-grease the CV joints and change the boots, and you should be fine.

Thanks for the advice. I'm still open to more advice from others, but here is the picture I was sent.

cv boot got dryrot, cracked, dried out the grease. got water and dirt, rusted, seized and snapped. this is why you inspect and replace cv boots and re-grease. id assume the passengers side is on its way to this as well.

Try CVJ Axle in Denver. I took 2 in there, one busted in half like yours and was out the door with two remanufactured axles for $300 with the core discount the same day! They still gave me the core discount for the busted one. I tried to gather all of the ball bearing just in case haha but they didn't even ask for them.

I bet you could get a remanufactured axle shipped to you for under $200 if you sent that core in. Who know you might even get one of my old axles!

CVJ Axles remanufactured OEM cv axles, steering racks, MB air injection smog pumps, as well as racing and off-road parts.

No one makes this car anymore. The government won't allow them, normal people won't buy them. So it's up to us: the freaks, the weirdos, the informed. To buy them, to appreciate them, and most importantly, to drive them.

You should definately try axle express in Schenectady New York this happened to both my front axles, and I just shipped the axles to them, and it was only 60 dollars each, new boots, and they even re-painted them. I would recomend them

Thanks for the tips guys, hopefully they will help some future iX owner. My own axles problems were resolved 3 months ago, shortly after this was posted ;-)

Just ordered a pair from CJV, I was going to have mine refurbished elsewhere but CVJ had a pair ready-to-go. Saves the car some downtime since I won't be waiting for the parts to be remanufactured and then shipped back. Paid about $139 per axle with the $85 core refund deposit per axle. So much less than I was originally expecting, I was thinking this would be closer to a grand to replace.
