    My new 89 325ix

I just recently totaled my 86 35i, but my boss had an 89 325ix that he was about to sell so it worked out nicely. The odometer shows 205k, but it doesnt work so who knows exactly where she is sitting at. But one of the main reasons I bought this car is because of the little black book that has alll the service records written out from the day it was bought off the lot up until 160k miles! So you know the previous owner had to baby this thing and you can tell from the interrior. I cant post pictures but she is Delphin Metallic/Black with a one of a kind Red pinstripe that I put on. Beautiful car, and I know she will be fun for years to come as long as I fix these small things.

She had been sitting in the shop for about 4 months when we pulled her out to let me take her for the first drive. Took her out and all felt well but then when I pulled back in she started smoking bad! Popped the hood and discovered one of the coolant hoses had ruptured. So I still had the rental car for a week so we figured we would go ahead and replace all the hoses and do the belts while we were at it. Got all the new hoses put on, timing belt, new water pump, new spark plugs, and a new distributor cap. So I was stoked after putting all this work in, and finally being able to take her for a cruise without fear of a hose busting or a belt squeaking.:D:D

Thennnnnn 2 days after I finish the work im out cruising and am sitting on a hill at a red light, I go to accelerate she catches for a second then, nothing revs up not catching in any gear. Tried going in first second and third, then drive ofcourse and nothing. Transmission is shot:shock:...... It will go in reverse all day but I think its illegal to drive everywhere backwards :curse:

So now I have a decision to make, and I could definetly use some advice! There is a local warehouse out here that has a manual transmission with the transfer case, that is ix specific for $1000, but the transfer case I currently have on my car was replaced 20k miles ago so its still fine, are the transfer cases specific to the transmission?
Or should I try to rebuild the transmission, my boss has an automatic transmission from an e23 that is the same besides the rear mount for transfer case and drive train, so we were thinking we could get a rebuild kit put both of these transmissions together and make one good one. That always leaves the possibility that it could go out on me again in 2 months. We are not experts on transmissions but are both mechanically inclined so we could attempt it with disastrous results.

Finally one last question, when we went to drain the transfer case fluid as we were dropping the bad transmission it was completly dry, all the wheels still spin fully with no glitch but I assumed it would have atleast some fluid to drain. Does the transfer case and the transmission share the transmission fluid or could this have been part of the reasoning the tranny went out??
Thank you very much any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

We looked around it for a feed slot and didnt find anything. Havent dropped the transfer case yet, but while she was sitting we did notice a small puddle of atf but we assumed it was from the transmission. When I drop it tomorow I will learn more

transfer case uses ATF about 0.5 litre, but gearbox uses gearbox oil about 1.25.. i used some castrol... was that mtx or something... that was recommended in shop..

Thank you very much jute!! Is there a possibility that the fact the tcase had no fluid that was keeping the car from driving??? I know it's probably farfetched idea but if all I gotta do is put new fluid in there that would be incredible!

do the 5 speed. automatic ix's are painfully slow, you won't regret it. you can always use your low miles auto t-case to rebuild the t-speed one, they're internally the same, you just swap the front cover and input shaft.

the 323i trans won't work. They're different cases. you might end up spending as much rebuilding an auto trans as swapping in the manual, and it's basically the same amount of work.

i dont think transfer case would cause that.. i think driving without gearbox oil will burn automatic gearboxs clutch very fast.. in this part i would start search for manual tranny... difference between automatic and manual Transfer case front cover
