my new ix and first bmw...

What up guys. I have just purchased my first bmw. Actually I purchased three e30s at the end of the summer. I now have an 87is bronzit, alpine 89ix, and an henna m3 89. Crazy I know. Here is how it happened. The two non m3 where a package deal that I got two for one. Great price so I couldn’t refuse. Like everyone else ive always loved the first gen m3. I got a deal on a shell that needs some minor rust removal. This is a long term project so I will leave that there. The 87 is being ignored right now and I will be posting it soon in this forum. Now on to the ix, it’s a car that I always saw on my way to work every morning. I had been on the hunt for an e30 since june. My younger brother asked me if I would sell the car I was driving to him a year ago, but I brushed him off and said I didn’t care about it and would give it to him when he graduated. (I thought he was in 10th not 11th at the time.) He hounded me for the car all summer and I couldn’t find a decent e30 all summer that wasn’t north of 7 thousand. Finally in early September I saw the ad on craigslist and thought the car looked familiar. I called and confirmed it was the one I saw everyday. The guy said he had reached an agreement and that the cars would be picked up 2 days later. Citibank was still open so I made him an offer he couldn’t refuse lol. A hundred bucks more than asking price which was 300 more than he had agreed. He is vw guy and said upkeep was annoying and expensive. The paint looked matte white and it was dirty but I had to buy it. The car is auto. (I had no clue that it was damn near impossible to find manual trans swap without buying another car.) I am no mechanic so my “inspection” ended there. The head made a ton of noise but I got caught in the moment and brought the car anyway. M20s are cheap so I figured it didn’t matter. Now, the problem is that I never like removing original parts from any car and would rather pay to have original parts restored than swapping. I was also unaware of all the drama caused by the all wheel drive. My brother owns several e46 m3. And I have always loved the s54. I saw many e30s with m50 and s50 and thought some of those had to be ixs. I know better now of course. S54 will someday sit in the e30m3. Another thing is that I didn’t know was that all the mechanics I was use to paying would become useless. So if any of you know of a reputable e30 mechanic on long island please pm me. Nobody can explain to me exactly what is wrong with the car. I have begun searching for the parts to make this a m20 stroker. I heard a video with a red e30 that sounded insane. Can you guys educate me on how reliable that setup might be. I was locked up from very early September till mid November. I have only had time to do the brakes and springs and shocks to it so far. Here are pics of how I got the car and then pics of the car after it was polished. Picture quality isn’t the greatest but hopefully I can get better ones in the future.

Holy crap dude.. have all it the paragraph structure. Commas, periods and separation go a long way. I share your enthusiasm for such a cool car but contain the excitement and make yourself at least appear a little more intelligent! Lol. Love the car.. Welcome to the wonderful e30 Awd variety. They are simply among the best.

M 20 injectors are somewhat noisy.... I'd be sure your not mistaken that your head noise isn't from that.. to answer some of your other questions.. no other engines can be swapped into the ix... I can't say it's completely impossible, but by the sounds of your mechanical aptitude, I Find such an arduous task as custom installing even an m50 to be very far out of your reach. Most people rebuild the engine, bulk up and rebuild the drivetrain and boost them, or go n/a with cams and intake options.. There are a lot of drawbacks to ix's with too much torque and power. Common areas of trouble Lie within the front differential failing and the front driveshaft slipping from a slight manufacturing bunk... do some research and decide where you'd like to see the car end up.

In my opinion, if I were you I'd take the time to do as you were... which is to take care of the basic preventative maintenance needs for the mechanical areas(fluids, bearings, seals, bushings.. etc.) All within the driveline. Nothing worse than having to find or repair a fried transfer case because of an overlooked leaky seal. And don't be IIntimidated to work on your own.. purchase a Bentley manual and get a good basic set of tools together and start Leaning Into trust in yourself than wasting dollars on shady mechanics who will take their sweet ass time and throw ridiculous prices on your car because of its "age and luxury"... there's too much free information here and a ton of guys willing to lend you their resources.

They're only as expensive as you want them to be.. If you want some nutty show winning prize car then it gets into a few thousands of dollars.. but a basic tune up and suspension refresher can have your car running and handling pretty solid for under 500$ and some wrench time on your own.

The ix has many drawbacks. Right now, it is my dd so im changing minor things on it. I just got front axles, control arms and a full tune up. tried replacing the o2 today but it is stripped. The rest will be done after I decide whether to boost the car or get high compression pistons. I have talked to someone who has the manual swap but he is 3 hrs away. Hopefully, i can pick it up this weekend. I don't work on my cars but i have already owned several boosted cars. Boost will not be my first choice unless HC get to pricey. (remember i have to spend plenty on the m3 still)
