    iX HELP! Front axle shaft...

Last night, when pulling out of my driveway, and turning the wheel about 1 and 1/2 turns, I noticed a loud banging/clicking/clunking noise... I recently had the drivers side CV boot replaced, but this sounded like it was coming from the passenger side. I live on a dead end, and I attempted a couple of three point turns to locate the source of the noise... I could not distinguish where it came from, but it sounded pretty bad. I parked the car and left it until this morning.

Upon further inspection, it looks like the front passenger side axle (drive)shaft is completely detached. It moves around freely when you touch it, up/down/left/right. I'm hoping it just popped out and that I can pop it back in, but after talking to a BMW tech, it seems that it could be the CV joint or the axle itself. I am stuck. I don't have the tools or proper mechanical know-how to fix this issue on my own. I'm probably going to have it towed to my mechanic tomorrow. If anyone has heard of an issue like this, please let me know any info. I really don't have $1000 to throw at a new front driveshaft. Thanks.

http://cvjreman.com/ in denver has new axles if you return the old. I was out the door with two new fronts axles after core refund for $300. Shipping shouldn't be too bad.

No one makes this car anymore. The government won't allow them, normal people won't buy them. So it's up to us: the freaks, the weirdos, the informed. To buy them, to appreciate them, and most importantly, to drive them.

Thanks downforce22... I called that company, and they said they could rebuild my driveshafts if necessary. But they don't have any new/remanufactured in stock. Still, for $300, not a bad deal at all. Gonna take it to the mechanic tomorrow to narrow down what's wrong. Still curious as to why the driveshaft is so loose and clanking. Hope I didn't ruin it.

My bad...I purchased their last pair of remanufactured IX front axles. They'll (CVJ in Colorado) be receiving my original pair for the core refund soon and then they can have those refurbished fairly quickly.

Same thing happened to me. The shaft just popped out of the external CV on a tight turn.

I bit the bullet and paid the dealer price...

Well, the axle is out and on its way to get rebuilt. What a PITA getting the axle nut off on the wheel hub! My mechanic had to cut the nut out. Hopefully, it will be on the road again next week. Thanks for all the help.

Axle is back in. All is well with the world. I sent it out to Axle Express in NY for a rebuild. Only cost me $60 plus shipping. The iX is running strong again. Pretty sure that all the potholes in Providence, RI had something to do with the axle breaking, even though I am super careful. Oh well, now I'm just hoping for a lot of snow this winter so I can finally see how good this car really is in bad weather. Thanks again for the help. Saved me almost a thousand bucks!
