    Only one new tire?

I experienced an unexpected blowout on one of my tires and was wondering if it would be bad for the VC to put exactly the same tire as the others, but a brand new one, the others are at less then 1/2 of their original thread left, am i just better off finding a used set of tire off craigslist?

I think it would be best to get a set. I know however, that it's not always financially possible to do the "best" thing. If I got a set off of CL, I would just make sure they are all similar tread depth.

Yeah especially because they are winter tires and i was planning on buying another set next winter... Im terribly worried about putting a new tire with the other 3 getting close to beeing to worn...

specially if you put it in front? uhh, have fun with your alignment. good tire on passanger side and you'll be puling toward the drivers side, and swap the tire to the other side and your be doing vice versa. Now put the good tire in the back and you'll go strait, but you'll be putting strain on your differential. I dont see any good options but all new tires, or buy 2 new for the front.

edit: you have a ix, i would just buy all new tires.

Some places will shave a single tire down to your desired tread depth.

I dont notice that small difference on my E30 anyway.

if they are snow tires, replace them. snow tires are done when they're under 50% tread anyway - the special rubber is only on the first half of the tread.

aside from potentially frying a $1500 tranfercase over a $75 tire, one tire will have vastly different grip than the other ones, which isn't safe.

Ended up finding a good set of used michelin xice on craigslist that was all worn the same just to finish the winter, didnt want to risk frying my transfer case for 80$

325iX Match Tread Depth and Pattern question on replacement

"We all know" you are supposed to match tires all around on the iX. So if one is ruined you either replace/match with exact tread and wear depth or you replace all 4. In other words you don't put a new one on and all the rest used and at different depths. But is it truly both tread pattern and treadwear/depth. Or can I have one with different pattern and almost identical depth? Don't want to chance ruining the diff or xfer case, but also don't want to throw out 3 perfectly good tires. Looking for real experience with these issues on a 325iX, good and bad. Thanks for helping!

What's the difference in diameter, circumference and RPM between a new tire and a halfway worn tire?

If the T-case VC isn't harmed by driving with no front driveshaft, then it WILL NOT CARE about one tire being new while the others are worn, especially if the new tire is on the front.

Yeah, if you must run a mismatched tire, put it on the front.

I replaced all 4 tires on my IX this last August and due to an incorrect toe - the front drivers side took a horrible beating and I had to replace it - with a new one..

I found some interesting articles on the subject - Tire Rack.com states that

"Tire diameter variations can be caused by accidentally using different sized tires, tires with different tread designs, tires made by different manufacturers, different inflation pressures or even tires worn to different tread depths."

I made the decision to buy one (same exact) tire instead of two - but I have less than 2000 miles on each tire.. since the other 3 are all very close to new tread depth - I won't worry to much about it..

If it was a different tread design (or manufacturer) - all four tires could (likely) wear at different rates and eventually diameter would become "mismatched". i.e. putting one tire on with different tread design would be more risky - in my opinion, I would be more concern about wear as the rubber / silcone content may be different and wear faster / slower than the others...

Here is a copy of the article:
