    What are the differences from a i M20 and a iX M20

I have herd the block castings are different. Is this true? are there any other differences with the M20 block or head? Im mainly wanting to just know more about these engines. I am doing some casual shopping for a e30 and would love an iX. My work just got a vary large contract and will be able to possibly get another one wile im working on my current E30. Also is it possible to install a front LSD on these cars. From whati have been reading about the AWD system both diffs need to be the exact same ratio or youll just destroy the transfer case.

I haven't compared side-by-side, but what I understand is that the castings are exactly the same. The casting has two bosses for dipsticks.
The RWD block has the forward dipstick location machined, while the AWD block has the rear location machined.

The pitch of the transfer gears from the transfer shaft to the oil pump drive shaft is opposite in the AWD. The RWD oil pump is forward of the oil pump drive shaft, while the AWD oil pump is rearward, so the oil pump drive shaft turns the opposite direction in the AWD engines.

Yes, both diff ratios need to be the same. There is no front limited slip available for the E30 front diff. 3.91 and 4.10 ratios are available in the US. 3.64 and maybe (?) 3.73 were available in Europe.

no, the castings are NOT the same. they are physically different and they have different part #s

      the block
      the intermediate shaft
      the oil pump

these are the differences. there's nowhere on the RWD block to drill for the ix dipstick tube, and vice versa. also the RWD block has a big hole where a valve goes for the oil pump that the ix block does not have.

as far as front LSD I'm not really sure that you want one.

I didn't know the castings themselves were different. That's wild... a single application block casting. I guess that's one reason the iX's were almost as expensive as M3's new.

yeah, I had this really nice casting I was going to use for my stroker, but it was for RWD.. I ended up using the 225k rusty casting I had from my ix parts car. Just as well, it's lasted 8 years with no problems :)

              quaife?

              I like this quote:

Show me an autocrosser who has replaced the front diff with anything other than a Quaife and I'll show you someone who didn't do enough research.

There's a lot of debate about the center and rear diffs, but there's no question about the front.

I suspect this would be hard/impossible since you would have to build a custom housing... since the front diff is pretty much inside of your oil pan and you may be one of the only ix's to ever upgrade the front diff.

Also, learn to search google and several forums:
