    odd jack test question

    so I need to figure out the condition of my transfer case, but the car has a real problem getting into first gear right now. I want to do the jack test, but I dont think I could roll it forward slowly or controlled enough to see if the wheels spin correctly or not. Should I jack it up and see if I make it forward at all? My other idea was to test it in reverse, but I dont know if that would work, ignoring the fact that it would be hard to set the jack up properly.

    Does anyone have any insight into this? Im mainly doing this to see if I need to get rid of the car or not because I cant afford to replace the awd as well as do the other things it needs. Any help is appreciated thanks

      jack test works just the same if you put the jack under front subframe and drive it slowly in reverse ,your testing the locking ability of the Viscous Coupling and it does not matter which output (front axles or rear) is raised to do the test.

        You don't need to get rid of the car, as the AWD still works even if the viscous coupling is dead. It'll still be more capable in low traction conditions than a RWD car.

            So I cant test it out because the car is pissing gas from the rubber hose that connects the fuel filter to the hard line so interim repairs are required

              While it is something of a pain to get to, that's just 3/8" (5/16"?) high pressure fuel hose. It should be a buck or two per foot at your favorite parts house.

                I'm hoping it's just a cracked hose and not a blocked line. The engine still runs though so it is getting some fuel. Thanks for the help

                  You don't really need to watch the wheels. If the vc is good, the car will move as soon as you let out the clutch. If its totally shot, you'll just sit there. If its in between, you'll have to give it more throttle.

                  Basically it should feel the same as if you were moving the car with all 4 wheels on the ground.

                    Except that jacks don't roll well...

                    And if it slips off the jack, the jack pad could damage what it hits.

                      Mine rolls fine. Just clean your floor really well. I like using the front as you can sorta use the gussets in the subframe to lock it in place.

                        are you talking about jacking it up in the front or placing the jack on the rear cross member. I was going to put it there or on the front half of the rear diff

                            Update:

                            I replace the rubber hoses leading to and from the fuel filter and that seemed to fix the leak issue, until i discovered a hairline crack in the hard line that leads from the fuel filter. I started it right up and tried to put it into gear, and it actually went in and didnt die out.

                            I was so excited that I threw the jack underneath the rear cross member and lifted it up. Had a buddy watch as i tried to crawl forwards. IT FUCKING MOVED! I cant tell you how excited I am to have a working awd system. This was the biggest little victory Ive ever had. My buddy said the rear wheels werent spinning too rapidly, although it did take a second for it to kick in. For now its working and im very happy
