    Whatever it is, it's not factory. Looks like possibly an auxiliary heater for the water/coolant system?

      i'm trying to think of a reason to pass coolant through this thing. i keep drawing a blank.

          I've never seen one of those in an e30 before, but I think some of the above suggestions are correct and that it's a sort of heat exchanger.
