    Yeah I have a set of SPI that have been around for ages too. I use them for roughing and sawing etc. That's fairly decent at 1" for a pair that's been knocked around for a minute, but the further you pull them, the more they tend to skew. So, a little trick is to zero them out near your mark and go from there. If you have a rear bearing, could always zero it out on that then measure the front to note the difference.

      Depends on the brand and calibration. Digi Mitsu's are pretty accurate to a thou, and has a half thou exponent on the screen. My off brand dials are about .001" at 3". Surprisingly the HF digi is less, but they tend to not always zero properly - so again you end up incremental anyways.
