    Lets talk about CV boots!

OK, well I did my CV boots last week at the VW shop I work at. I have a couple pointers for you all that helped me out alot.

    - When you are trying to take off the lower ball joint.
Take off the caliper and disk
Then you will need to take off the dust shield, three 10mm bolts
after those are out you can hit the control arm with a hammer, hit the outside edge a couple of times and the joint will split. If you try it the normal way of pounding on the spindle hole where the bolt goes it will not come out.
    - Removing the CV shaft.
There is a 30mm bolt that holds the spindle and the cv together, once that is loose you can push the shaft with a screw driver, DO NOT POUND ON THE END OF THE SHAFT WITH A HAMMER UNLESS YOU HAVE A PUNCH IN THE CENTER OF IT. Once you have that loose and the lower ball joint loose the axle will be free.
    - Removing the boots
I opted to remove the whole shaft and work on it at a desk. With the whole shaft out I started by cutting away the ripped inner boot. Cleaned it out and grabed my clip tool to get the shaft out of the joint. This is not a easy thing to do on my car, the shaft was stuck onto the inner CV. So we went to the outer CV and that one slid off like butter. All old grease was cleaned out. I took my boot kit and started with the inside joint, put the new boot on and filled it up with new grease. slide the boot on and your ready of the outer CV boot. This one goes on the same way, make sure you put your clamps on before you slide the boot on though. Now your ready to put it all back together.
This would also be a good time to do things like change your fluids, brakes and struts.

Anyone have any other tricks please post them

my trick for taking apart the axle - I don't, I bring a case of beer to the local axle shop and they do it for free. :p

seriously, that shits messy! I tried it once and wasted a lot of time - now I don't even bother.

I use a hub puller for the front axle - sometimes they slide out easy, but a lot of times they seize up. I like to coat the splines with CV grease before I put them back together.

stretch the boot out when you clamp it on - the long skinny part of the ribs I mean. this will keep them from touching and rubbing through, which is important if your car is lowered.

oh I have part #s for an alternative CV boot kit from a ford that will fit our cars - exactly the same as the BMW part (made by lobro and everything), it just says Escort on the box instead of BMW and costs half as much

I'll post it up when I get home

I got the same boots, paid 12 bucks each for them. I forget the web site though. Next on my list is brakes, all drive line fluids, exhaust, and retrofit e28 power sport seats into the car. Yes the e28 seats fit too, the bolts line up with the seat belt tie down in the back, then you drill a hole for the dront. Then its just a matter of hooking up the wires.

I have M3 sport seats, but I think I want something else - they're pretty worn, the GF hates them, and they're heavy. but that's OT :p

Is Nando your real name? I met a guy a couple years ago named Nando, really cool guy. He was working at one of the portable food stands at a music festival I went to. He ran the flat grill.

Jack up all 4 wheels and put the car in gear. all 4 wheels should turn, you should be able to stop either of the front wheels with your foot. Then stop the car and just start wiggling the shafts around to see if theres any play in them. You will want to take them out to do the boots anyways so i would say take them out, remove the boots and inspect the bearings. If they are worn out real bad then you will need to replace the axles.

Well your going to have a hard time finding one person with all the parts you need. Just buy this one untill you find the other side. It will give you time to take it apart and clean, re-grease, and put new boots on it.
