OK, well I did my CV boots last week at the VW shop I work at. I have a couple pointers for you all that helped me out alot.
- When you are trying to take off the lower ball joint.
Take off the caliper and disk
Then you will need to take off the dust shield, three 10mm bolts
after those are out you can hit the control arm with a hammer, hit the outside edge a couple of times and the joint will split. If you try it the normal way of pounding on the spindle hole where the bolt goes it will not come out.
- Removing the CV shaft.
There is a 30mm bolt that holds the spindle and the cv together, once that is loose you can push the shaft with a screw driver, DO NOT POUND ON THE END OF THE SHAFT WITH A HAMMER UNLESS YOU HAVE A PUNCH IN THE CENTER OF IT. Once you have that loose and the lower ball joint loose the axle will be free.
- Removing the boots
I opted to remove the whole shaft and work on it at a desk. With the whole shaft out I started by cutting away the ripped inner boot. Cleaned it out and grabed my clip tool to get the shaft out of the joint. This is not a easy thing to do on my car, the shaft was stuck onto the inner CV. So we went to the outer CV and that one slid off like butter. All old grease was cleaned out. I took my boot kit and started with the inside joint, put the new boot on and filled it up with new grease. slide the boot on and your ready of the outer CV boot. This one goes on the same way, make sure you put your clamps on before you slide the boot on though. Now your ready to put it all back together.
This would also be a good time to do things like change your fluids, brakes and struts.
Anyone have any other tricks please post them
