just got driveshaft replaced on my ix, still making broken driveshaft noise??

hey i just got my driveshaft replaced on my ix. and there was an obvious noise i could hear which i thought was the broken front driveshaft. its a kinda raspy paper hitting a fan type noise. and i was pretty sure that was the driveshaft. but once i drove away from the shop with my new driveshaft, the noise was still there. is this something else that is wrong? or is it a normal noise?

    1) wrong forum
    2) there are 6 drivshafts on an ix. you have to be more specific.

the front driveshaft, between the transfer case and the front diff, the teeth on the driveshaft broke on the transfercase side.

the output splines in the tranfercase are still stripped. a new shaft won't fix that.

does that mean i need a whole new transfer case? will it damage the driveshaft if i dont replace it right away?

can someone maybe explain the noise they hear when the gears are stripped? cause the shop said they thoroughly inspected the transfer case for damage and they couldnt see anything.

No, you need a 3/4" longer driveshaft.

Did that on a customers car almost 4 years ago, and it runs like a champ. We sent it out to a local driveshaft shop that added length and balanced it.

You can take that shaft out for time being and have a RWD e30, lol.

yeah, adding length to the shaft is a good way to fix it. also, you don't have to replace the entire transfer case for that gear, you can buy it seperately as well. but the lengthened shaft is about $300 vs $1200 for a transfercase. hell, my lengthened shaft was cheaper than a new OEM one..

is this a good option for a lengthened driveshaft? ive heard kinda mixed thoughts about it. im not sure if i trust it or not.

1/4" will give you about 6 months before it strips again - that's something you do if you haven't already stripped them to increase the spline depth. BT, DT. ;)

also, most of the time stripped splines is from improper lubrication. Look for Molykote BR2 Plus.

k thanks, so i guess ill have to find a place to lengthen the driveshaft. do i have awhile? can i drive the car how it is? or would that cause more damage? i just got the driveshaft replaced and id like to wait awhile if i can

you can remove the driveshaft temporarily. I wouldn't leave it that way forever though.

I have an 89' ix and if I remove the front drive shaft it will not pull. Dont think you can make it rear wheel drive.
