This same thing happens to me after driving around in the rain (stutering, exhaust popping, difficult starting). I also noticed my MPG guage jumping all over the place, quick RPM drop, and Check Engine Light came on.
My car would do all that even a few days after it rained. I unpluged the conection to the Air Flow Sensor and noticed moisture inside the connector. I took my air compressor and blew out the moisture in the plug and my car started up just fine and ran without any problems.
I thought is might have been the Crank Sensor at first but it was the moisture in the Air Flow Sensor connector that caused all my problems.
