Hi pitch whine above 55 mph

I have an 89 325iX that has a higher pitch whine after I go above 55 mph. The noise is not real loud, but noticeable (at least I notice it!). It seems to be coming from the front. It does not seem to correlate with applying power or not. Is this the start of transfer case problems, or a bearing problem? Is there any way to narrow down the problem?

could it possibly be from one of the belt driven systems (AC, power steering, alt.)??

it's probably a wheel bearing. the transfercase is behind the shifter so if it made noise it wouldn't be coming from the front. :)

i have a similar issue, but it is very consistent with acceleration (the faster I go, the faster the whine gets) ... still haven't figured out what it is.
