lol, That doesn't look like sun damage either... Could be though, if the owner bought the car then never washed or waxed it.... ever

Value of Car vs. Cost of proper paint job?

Yeah, would be a good option for track beater, but if you want a fancy DD, prolly not best bang for buck.

it sat outside from 2002 till summer 2009 without moving. how much can a respray cost me? would that involve just spraying the outside? or would they need to remove the engine and interior?

If you prep the car (which isn't hard) and then take it to maaco, it can be done for around $300. I did it on my E36, and it looked great for a DD. There was only one mis-spray, and that was some fish eye on the trunklid. It's the best bang for the buck in my opinion. Lots of other members have done it to their E30's.

I've been considering doing my own prep and taking it to Maaco, but I haven't heard good things.

would maaco do the calypsorot color? what does DD mean? and does prepping it mean sanding it down?

Well, I'm not one to tell you much about paint and prep and stuff... But I'm sure depending on how good a quality you want the end result, the more prep you'll be doing.

Looks like you have complete single stage paint failure. As said before, if you can pull all the trim, bumpers, etc., do prep like sanding, etc. and throw the guy an extra $100, you can do pretty well.

Pretty much they spend a certain amount of time on it, and the more you do beforehand, the better your paint looks. Painting is a lot like detailing - preparation is 80% of the battle.
