Trunk doesn't stay open? Spoiler Installed

I installed a MTech II spoiler the other day, and it looks great. However, now my trunk will not stay open on it's own. Does anyone know if there is a way to remedy this problem? The car is a 4door sedan (if that matters).

Did the cars with MTech II come with a different hardware for supporting the trunk?

Thanks in advance for your help.

The mtech2 spoiler is significantly heavier than the stock iS piece. Having said that there are adjustment tabs right where the speakers are. If you look inside the trunk and look up at the parcel shelf, you should be able to adjust the tension on it. Might help keep it up.

As dude8383 said, if you re-adjust the springs to sit on the perch closer to the rear of the car, the springs will have enough tension to hold the trunk open and not guillotine your head.

I have no personal experience with the MTechnic specific springs, but I can only imagine that to get the springs to raise the trunk on their own, you'll need to get the MTechnic specific springs.

Yes give more tension to the torsion springs. You will need a good amount of force to bring them up the the front slot. Do not let go of it. If it still does not work, you will need to get you torsion springs and they are the worst thing to install on a BMW, but doable.

Sweet! Thanks for all of the replies.

I did not know that I could adjust the tension of the springs and will try that tomorrow.

After I posted this I checked real oem and saw the corresponding part numbers...at $11 each it is not too expensive for the springs, but sounds like they are a pain to install.

The results for anyone else that runs into the same problem......

If you put the torsion springs into the other location it does provide enough tension to hold up the trunk if you are on a level surface. However, the slightest movement will cause the trunk to fall.

I called bav auto (as I had some other parts on order from them) and the price on the upgraded torsion springs was $10.95....not too bad. I will let you know how the install goes.

Good luck. BMW has a special tool for this install. If it is anything like the e28, which is the one I did, you need to load (spin it about 180 degrees) the spring to give it tension. If you just install as is, it wont work. Pay attention to the unistall to see how it twists. Also it should be one for each side, so don't mix them up. Watch the recoil if you let go, cut my fathers's cheek pretty good.
