Best way to polish... polished aluminum wheels

    My wheels are looking dull.
I have mothers aluminam mag polish.. & its not working at all to bring it to a mirror polish.
is there techniques to get it shining again?

that's what I use. maybe you're not putting in enough work? perhaps try a wheel polish kit that attaches to a drill.

Most wheels have a clear over them. In order to polish them out, you have to strip the clear with either sandpaper or chemicals. If sanding you need to final sand with 1000 wet. What grit you start with, depends on what it takes to remove the clear. So try 1000 wet, & if that doesn't take off the clear try something a little rougher, like 600 or 400. Just remember, any scratches you put in have to be taken out with the 1000 in order for the Mother's to properly polish out the wheel.

Tha Driver has it right. I'm working on some basket weave lips for a friend right now. I started with 500 wet and then went to 1000 wet. I then used a brown rouge on a buffing wheel then finished with red rouge.

They came out okay but I'm going to sand them from about 400/300 all the way to 2000 or 2500. Then I'll go back with the polishing rouge.

The more work you put into the prepping, the better the finished product will be. Just take your time.

To polish my wheels on my truck (they have no clear) i use this liquid polish. I forget the name but I know its about $25 a bottle but its amazing!

If you want to start over I would recomend stripping ur wheels of clear coat (if they have any) try using a spray on paint remover. then start at 1000 grit and go up to 2000. If you do sand them I would recomend using WD-40 when sanding. It makes it easier to sand. And remember in between each level wash wheels off good. After you have reached 2000 polish them 2-3 times or until you can see yourself!

ive been redoing a set of euroweaves and a set of vw snowflakes for my rabbit gti, ive sanded 400, 600, 800, 1000, then use this stuff called Colonel brassy, liquid polish, awesome stuff. then i finish with mothers. cant beat it. but as someone else said, its all about how much time you put into them, cant get lazy and expect perfection.

Be sure to clean your bucket out between each grit of sandpapers, and use fresh water. Don't move to the next grit till you are sure got all the scratches out from the last grit. Like everyone says its all about how much you put in to it.

Add a few drops of dish soap to the water as well. Breaks the surface tension of the water.

Also, I've used the technique of putting the car on jack stands and running the car in gear to spin the wheel so you can polish it. It's a bit sketch, but if the proper measures are taken for safety, it works great. Did these wheels:

                  They looked like this before:

guys.. I already polished the wheels. thats what i meant by title..

These are the wheels after getting the dish polished.
I used my mothers mag & aluminam polish to try and get the original polish and shine back..
it looks nice.. spent 2 hours on all four wheels.
But it's not as shiny as ive seen? is there any other compounds recommended?

Your never going to get the beautiful chrome/mirror shine unless you strip the clear and Polish up through all the grits.
