wet sand.....help pls...

Im new to wet sand/compound/polish...BUT,...I just did a black helmet visor and painted it white..came out great..


prepped the plastic......painted a few coats white...wet sanded....painted....w/sanded

then clear a few coats.....w/sand....some more coats....w/sand.....compound/wax...fantastic..

here is the prob:

wet sanded a small ...5 inch x 5 inch spot on my red 90i....w/sanded down to 1500.....but now the compund and polish WONT remove the sand marks?its hazy....why is that?....Im thinking perhaps there is no clear on the car?.....I dont know if its the oe paint.....
how can i correct this faux pas????..

what are you using to remove the haze? First off you need a cutting compound. Two, you'll need a high speed polisher. Makita or Millwakee. Third you'll get faster results with a wool bonnet then sponge. But you gotta know what you're doing or you'll burn through pretty fast. Getting rid of haze after wet sanding by hand takes FOREVER!!! if you are good you can cut and polish with the same product at the same time.
Also keep in mind you are working with 20+ year old paint here. Not fresh stuff like your helmet perhaps. I don't believe they used clear coat in those days on the red paint they used. I think they used enamel.

Go to 2000 wet or even finer - maybe even 3000, & use a stiff sponge pad to reduce finger marks. Use a wheel (air or electric buffer) & it should come right out.
But do be careful as mentioned above. ;)

Ceeker, you are correct--the only colors that were clearcoated were the metallics. You've been wetsanding single stage enamel paint.

I have no further advice unfortunately.

I only went to 1500.....and only used Turtle wax rubbing compound then some blitz wax...very mild.

I had some experience with wet sanding on my coupe. A power wheel made it much easier and had better results. Check my coupe project in my sig for more info. You got any pix?

1500 is still too abrasive. w/ 2000 or 2500grit, you shouldn't see any marks once you polish it out.

If you're doing it by hand, try some scratch remover after the rubbing compound.

I had bought some turtle only for the helmet paint...it was fine.


Ill get more paper first...2k and 2500....then get at it....
