The metallic flakes will stand differently and change the color, depending on how you mixed the paint, room temp, air pressure, etc. And then when you think you have a perfect match, you take it out in the sun and its different at different angles relative to the rest of the car.
Pearl is kinda difficult as well.
Pearl is the hardest to match, even individual panels when painting a car in full. I have seen him re-paint cars because there was a piece left out of the booth, and even loosely hang the bumper covers on etc while spraying pearl as he said just moving to another part of the booth can change the effect.

      so take pictures for us.

you see in general unless you are painting your car over completely youre sort of counting on a coincidence if a color of house paint is the same as your car.

Zinnoberrot, or royal or regal red is a very generic car color based on the english royal flag. every paint comes in that color. krylon paint does too. To make a long story short, that family owned a car company that became MG rover, and their cars came in only that color. So it is the english sports car color dating to the 30s or actually predating all cars.

none of the other bmw colors are like that that I know of. I believe whats called kelly green is the same thing, never saw a bmw in that color.
Even white and black. You see the guy who painted his e30 white did the whole car not just a fender...

but you know what, I have never seen that it doesnt work either.

^interesting info. i'm personally not so worried about the color not matching because the car isn't diamondschwarz, it's the non-metallic schwarz.

It is far from perfect and requires an occasional polish to keep the really deep gloss but when that is done it looks great. A big benefit is touch ups are cheap and simple and I learned allot in the process.

Ya i tried to make it short. When I found out my car was the same color as rustoleum I tried to find out why.

this color, cinnabar or vermillion, is common between all makes. I most commonly see it in mustangs. It is the sport car color. Not the first car with this color actually but the mg roadster is the most associated with it.

@ underconstruction, what color is that? I have an early alpine white car and just had someone back into my fender. it pulled out alright but cracked the paint so I figured I would try this. Or if anyone knows a good match for it I would appreciate it.

The color is a complicated mix of many different oil impregnated molecules that together form Rustoleoum white, lol. I have no idea if it will be a good match for you, I tend to doubt it will unless you were to paint the whole car? Many auto paint stores can mix any color and put it in to a compressed aerosol can and will match perfect for $25.

5 years ago guys were doing roller paint jobs here on a weekly bases. I think the most famous one was of the guy in NY that built a TCD stage II M30 car and had 2 months of work into his roller paint job and a weak into driving the car destroyed the car in an accident.

They seemed to die off shortly afterward.

rustoleum is a much higher quality paint than e30 bmw paint.

Thats why it orange peels so much, it takes a lot more time to dry.

I have learned the difficulty is not with spraying it on, as much as drying it it takes days. and the outter drying more than the inner is what messes it up.

even that youtube vid tells you nothing if it doesnt tell you what the outside temperature and humidity was he stored it.

In the youtube video with rollers, the expert is using a hairdryer to dry it immediately. Thats the real secret.

Spraying on an even coat is simple. off in phoenix ( arizona) I think spraypainting your car probably looks way better than somewhere where its humid.
Elaborate on that? I'm pretty sure that rusto will fade/oxidize faster than bmw paint, be easier to scratch, and will not adhere as well. In what way is it better?

Is your car brillantrot? PLEASE reply...i desperately want to find a matching color for brillantrot that I can get cheap.

auto paint is very durable and that sounds like a pain to me. I have a bad rotator cuff though so Im one armed in that project so maybe its just me.

ya silver and gold(or bronzit) are the hardest colors to match. Even the body shops will mess it up. Sorry to tell you that.

If you really want a match, you paint the whole thing over.
I'd agree that light metallic colors are the hardest.

you know what, it depends on whether its the 2 stage or the 1 stage.

But in general, if you think car paint is more durable than house paint and more resistant to fade, go outside your house with some sandpaper and take some off. You will never think that again. get your car keys out and scratch a line in your house. ( maybe the neighbors house)

In general, if you have any rustoleum on your car it will outlast any 1 stage acrylic paint they put on e30s.
They are the same thing, acrylic paint, but rustoleum is thicker and has the additives for outdoor paint.

Paintjobs should last 20 years or more. You can look at listings on 20 year old rustoleum paint jobs. It is frequently done on old 50s cars. google rustoleum paint, is rustoleum better than oem ( obviously go back to the 70s, rustoleum is better than any of the laquer paints. car paint used to last a few years)

for e30s, its just the same thing but thicker. It may not adhere as well also because it is thicker.

as far as brilliantrot.... his car could be henna rot. one pic looks brilliant rot, one pic looks henna rot.

That is the only time ive ever seen someone use that color rustoleum on an e30 ever and he never answered.

ANYONE WANT TO GIVE AN EXPERT OPINION?
Ive seen like a dozen people use zinno for regal red including myself.

I guarantee you this, rustoleum is better paint than maaco uses, or actually any paint shop uses for a cheap paint. I have the misfortune now of having rustoleum, oe paint and some maaco spray on my car all on different panels and I just gave you the ranking.

Maaco spray comes off with one spin of the buffer.

rustoleum DEFINITELY fades less than bmw paint its an outdoor house paint made for direct sunlight with a 10 year guarantee. It definitely doesnt adhere as well at all and it takes like 4 days to dry it is meant for flat walls not curves. It is hard to work with. every coat wrinkles.

The only thing about rustoleum that I should mention is that it seems to rock chip easily. But its REALLY easy to repaint. It doesn't quite scratch easily though.
