Best paint for a respray

Just a thought. If you were to have a good amount to spend on a paint job, it would be almost as cheap to buy new body panels and have them painted, as you wouldn't have to pay for the old ones to be stripped, and you could sell the old ones for a little bit of profit. That way you have newer body panels too.

absolutely not! you never need to take all the paint off, unless the paint is cracking. if a fender doesnt have dents in it, it takes approx. 10-15 min. to prep it for new paint.

OK true dat, but often the more expensive/comprehensive resprays for cars with poorer condition paint do include stripping down to the metal, in which case the new panel idea is not a completely bad one.

No. My cars paint is PPG.

PPG is used by BMW as well.

PPG DBU, only stuff I'll shoot with. About $60/pint for the simple colors (White, black, etc) Reds and metallics can raise the price quite a bit. Lays out really nice.

I sprayed my fender with some 086 schwarz sherwin williams single stage. It was about $20 for a pint. Looks pretty good considering i've never painted before. Matches well after a wet sand a buff. Probably as cheap as you can get.

Ok as far a prep work goes you can get a way with just wet sanding what ever is on the car, and hitting it with a good epoxy primer to fill in any small scratches and knicks. Then gide coat it (mist black spray bomb on to it) and block it off till all the black is gone then pant it how ever you want single stage enamal or base clear what ever.

If it were me I would strip it to metal with a chemical striper an then do all the prep you can your self. Its not supper hard, go to your local paint shop and get Tal strip 2 (its aircraft coating remover) lay it on heavy with a paint brush an (put plastic garbage bags on top of it you have lots of paint layers). Let it sit 10 -15 min, then take a 4in drywall knife and scrap all the paint. It will just fall off use a small putty knife for smaller areas and razor blades in relly tight areas. This way you can find and correct any rust, then do the epoxy primer as stated above. If you have a air compresor a cheap gun for primer is all you will need (40 bucks at TSC)

The side job way is the best bet, never take a car to maco, earl schibe, or any other elcheapo place always looks like shit. Have who ever is doing your work do your body work and 2 coats of base and clear the shit out of it. once you have it painted wetsand agin with 1500 grit (lightly) and polish to get rid of the orange peel (that step is optional). You should be able to get all that done for no more than $1300 if you do most of the prep and cut and polish your self.

Also as far as brands PPG or Dupont are my 2 top choices
