    Paint chip/touch up repairs

Just looking for some advice here - I've got a few paint chips around the car and some minor surface rust on the bottom of the fenders that i want to grind off and repaint, and had 2 questions:

    1) For the chips, what's the best way to go about it? Has anyone had experience with drcolorchip.com ? I found out about it at bimmerforums but don't know if it's any good.

    2) for the general repainting, where should i go for touch up paint? I've got an '89 in BMW-Schwartz (not the metallic)
    Thanks!

btw just saw you have schwartz black. Luckily imo thats the easiest color to touch up. I've had great results just using Duplicolor universal black (touchup paint) from pepboys for that color. I used it on my old schwartz + brilliant black Audi. No need to go dr colorchip with an easy color to touchup.

Awesome, good to hear! Saw your second post too - I guess that's a good solution to the rust repaint bits, but would dr. colorchip be my only option for filling in the chips? it'd be nice to have the new paint be flush with the rest.

yeah Dr Colorchip isn't thick, so it doesn't really 'fill' the chip in well. Their colormatching is what makes their product better than the rest, but in your case schwartz is pretty easy to match with the over-the-counter stuff....which is a lot thicker too.

Cool - I'll take a look at over the counter stuff then.
What would be good for filling in the deeper gouges then (like a few layers chipped off) before using paint?

go for dr. colorchip. and request for an enamel base (which is the same as your car's factory finish).

most automotive touch up paints are lacquered base so they can negatively affected the existing and future paint.

depending on how deep the chips are, i've had pretty good success w/ filling in paint layers, with a day in between to dry before adding another later. I've even gone as far as adding more paint than the chip, and wetsanding/buffing down so its' smooth with the rest. I never really tried using any type of filler.

Is the drcolorchip not by default an enamel base?

Anyways, looks like i'll be going for this if it's not too too pricey. Thanks y'all!
Audiquattrot, i'll probably use generic paint for the fenders, though.

Sweet! Will need to grab some before winter!

On a slightly unrelated note is there any hope for repairing a cracked/rusted part of a rear valance (plastic bumper car)?

I'd at the very least scrape the loose rust off, and use POR-15 to coat....to prevent from spreading. Amazon sells POR-15 starter kits which is more than enough to treat that area + a couple more rust spots throughout the car.
