    Paint buffers?

    Who uses what? I am considering purchasing a Proter Cable 7424 direct from PC. Priced from 108 to 138. Opinions?

    I have a crappy Sears unit. It's a wast of my day with this pos but It doesn't burn paint.

    that's the best random orbital you can buy. but that won't give you the best results. I'd go buy a couple hoods from a junker, pick up a rotary buffer, and practice. When you get good with it, the results will be substantially better than what you would obtain with the PC.

      only thing i ever use a random orbit for is just plain old waxing.....
      if you could take a hood and do half with orbital and half with random orbit, you'd never use a random orbit again....

      do what kris says, buy the orbital, and get a couple junker hoods and have at'er...

      btw i do this for a living, only ever messed up one car, i do about one a day thou for 2 years.... just keep it moving and keep the speeds down, watch out for ridges in the body work, paint is the thinnest there

        rotary=1000000 times better than orbital

          I tried a random orbital on my car last year.. yeah... doing it by hand was more effective. haven't tried a rotary though (I need to, too many tiny scratches!).

            if you try it make sure you have some way to adjust the speed, we have a big box that adjusts the amout of power that gets to the buffer itself

              your buffer runs off a voltage regualtor? burly.

                I have a big Souix buffer (Got it from Snap-on) 10"(I think)that is Multi-Speed ranging from very low RPM to HIGH speed. It IS the type to burn paint w/ if you don't know what your doing. But if your working w/ different compounds, etc then you need the variable speeds. It works great but when your done you feel like your atms are gonna fall off.

                    I'd steer clear of the direct drive orbitals. The drill-like pattern is very repeditive, leaving room for one to burn the paint if they're not careful.

                    Oh, and I'd give the Griot's Garage Random Orbital if you're looking at that PC 7427. I've actually used them side-by side. The GG one has more torque, better cooling, smoother operation, and a better placed handle (among other things). Food for thought.

                            Why, Griots just sells a PC. I looked at quite few places and I am practicing with a crudy oxiized car to start with. If I burn the paint who cares it might be an improvement.

                              We actually phased out the PC in favor of our own. I have used them side-by-side and I can honestly say that the Griots one is better in probably every aspect. Not to mention it has a lifetime warranity, unlike most machines you'll find anywhere. Oh well. What polishes are you using?
