So I just got a quote from a shop for 2k-3,500 for a respray with me doing all the prep my self. I'm like wtf is this even close to reasonable? Seems outrageous to me.
Re spraying my car.

Search. There is plenty of info in this subject, but no, dependent upon your region, that's cheap. Scary cheap.Derek- -
I got a $3,500 quote on my E30 sedan & that's with them doing all the prep. My car was originally Delphin but one of the PO's color changed it to Alpine White. Unfortunately, they didn't properly prep the original paint so it's chipping off on most of the edges. Plus, the clear is peeling on the hood, top, and trunk. With this quote they were going to take it back to metal, do necessary minor body work, prime, and apply 2 stage paint in the Alpine White. All that for $3,500.

Just labor cost or with materials? Like I said it depends on the quality of paint as well. I painted my e30 but spent close to 3k on all the supplies to do it from start to finish. That being said, I also painted my jetta and spent only $500 total. The difference between a quickie job and a quality job.
If you're doing all the prep maybe you should try shooting it yourself! You can get great results in your garage with a temp. paint booth.Comment

they quoted that with labor and everything. I'm trying to do what you did with your jetta. What all would i need to do to shoot it in my garage? Don't i need a ventilated area so i don't get dust particles in my paint? Also where would I get paint from? could i go to Sherwin Williams and have them mix me up a batch of automotive paint? I would love to paint my own car but the painting process seems beyond my level know how.Just labor cost or with materials? Like I said it depends on the quality of paint as well. I bought production level Dupont products (base and clear) when I did the jetta. Got it from a local paint/body supply shop. They'll sell to the public if you buy with cash. On the e30 I used colorrite base (because I chose a motorcycle color) and PPG DC4000 clear. Quite pricey at about $500 for 5 mixed quarts, but much nicer than the cheaper Dupont stuff. I bought that from Keystone Automotive or LKQ (parent company). I think they're nation wide so you may be able to find a location in your area. They also have their own line of more economical paints that I've heard good things about.
As far as the booth goes, I built a 2x4 temporary construction in one of the bays and skinned it with 6 mil clear plastic, installed 4 box fans with filters on one side, and built a filter box that tucked under the garage door on the other side (exhaust). I also covered the floor with cheap red rosin paper you can get at any building supply store because I didn't want paint on my nicely epoxy coated floor. As long as you clean the area well and don't track things in, you'll come out with a relatively dust/dirt free job.Comment

Do you have pics of the car I'm really leaning toward this way of doing things.I bought production level Dupont products (base and clear) when I did the jetta.
