Stripping paint off my car.

So the time has come for me to start preparing my car to respray it first I need to sand my car down. I bought a porter cable random orbital sander from lowes will this work? Also what grit sand paper should I start with I've heard so many different grits i don't know which one to start with.

you don't need to take it all the way down to metal, only use paint stripper on panels that have no trim (hood off the veh, fender with no moldings etc..)
if you really want to strip it all the way down to metal start with 80 grit them go over all of it with 180 grit.

the orbital sander will work it will just take forever

%90 of the cars paint is flaking off. I can use my finger nail and peel the paint off the hood down to metal it's that bad. Which sander would you recommend I just picked that one up an hour ago and can take it back am get a different one if I need to

Sand/media blasting is the best way to go about it. Sanding will work, but it will take a lot of time. A heat gun and a putty knife work well for removing paint. Heat the paint until it almost bubbles, then scrape it off. Finish by sanding with 80 grit. I've used this process on my MG and it is far the easiest and quickest for stripping paint. For hard to scrape areas, use a wire wheel on a grinder. These work very well:

I feel like that work roughy the metal up to much there are some parts that just sanded down. I'd prefer sanding most of it tho. The hood is peeling all over and the roof has no clear coat and the rest of the car has deep what appear to be rock chips all over the place.

I have a Hutchins DA...it's a great machine! I don't have any experience with electric DAs but pretty much all body shops use pneumatic.

I dont think my compressor can keep up its only like a 5 gallon.

Yeah that's definitely not going to cut it. You'd be better off going with the electric then.

I have both a pneumatic and a cheap harbor freight electric DA. They both do their job. I like the electric DA TBH because I can adjust the speed and what not.

How much of the prep work are you doing? sounds like you need to do some more research. I prepped my car for paint also.

All of it. I'm trying to research but I find so many diff answers for things
