Thinking about repainting my e30 (bronzit)

Just curious what you guys recommend as far as paint brand/type goes. There are so many options out there, it's overwhelming. Would like to hear first hand experience. PPG seems to have a good rep around here.

The color right now is the OEM bronzit paint. I am not doing a color change and would prefer a close to bronzit match.

    Thanks r3v.

I like and use Standox. The only PPG product I use anymore is 9300 black single stage.

I prefer valspar paints for a cheaper projects or rm products for doing big projects. My car is painted with RM and it turned out very nice.

All the good paints for decent prices are outlawed in Cali. Everyone I contacted in my area quoted me $500-800 for bottom of the line single stage, without reducer. I got my paint out of state and paid $130 for the gallon. 1 gallon is barely enough for an E30, mine came out gritty in a couple spots and I didn't have enough for the body kit. You would be much safer with 2 gallons so you can do touch ups or have matching paint in case you crunch a door or a hood and have to repaint it.

+1^ yes don't be shy on buying paint. I've had that happen before to. If your getting single stage then at least get some good stuff, if you get base clear you can go with a cheaper base and a higher quality clear to save a little money.

I personally like the PPG DBC line. it can be a bit pricey depending on color but great quality. I've used it with good results. it takes more coats to cover then some other brands i've used but the finish is very fine.

a lot of people and manufacturers recommend buying "matching" paint and clearcoat.

single stage paint will be easier to paint and take less effort overall, but the finish will not be as fine or as durable as a correctly done basecoat/clearcoat paint job.

I think one gallon of color (at least in base/clear) should cover a car without issue. Some with a bit of experience can do a car in 3 quarts. especially when using the same color. I haven't used more then a gallon on a car before. even when doing door jams and stuff.

are you doing door jams and stuff?

get good automotive masking tape! and have fun eith it :)

if you give the color code from your car to the paint supplier the match should be very close.

Like I said my car is a bronzit, BMW paint code 139. Where can I find some nice color-matched (as close as possible) paint by the gallon? Trying not to spend a ridiculous amount of $$ per gallon.

I have been searching and can't find anything.

Check harbor freight, they had OEM bmw paint for my e90, should have e30 paint also.

try a locally based auto parts store or an "auto body supply" store.

If you can't find someone that mixes paint on the spot, try to find someone that orders custom mixed paint. the paint color for most mixed-to-order paints will be very close. that's the way to go.

ask around if you can't find somewhere. some body shop, auto parts store, or something ought to know of a place.
