Front sunroof drain tubes just drain into the rockers - not a great design. That's what causes rust in a lot of the older ones.

Check your taillight gaskets and the trunk vent seals by pouring water over it and watch on the inside. Pull the carpet lining back under the lights and on the sides. It was hard for me to track down water in my trunk because it would only be apparent after a lot of rain. Finally I tried this and my vents let water gushing in around them. You can use adhesive foam weatherstripping from Lowes to replace the gaskets for the vents or the lights. Helluva lot cheaper than oem.

Also look for water dribbling onto the battery cover - that's probably the corner of the trunk seal.

If it's from the rear window gasket, water usually collects on the tray under the rear speakers and under the rear seat.

On my old car, the driver's side trunk hinge tore a spot weld out of the body, right in the rain gutter under the rear windshield. This is apparently kinda common. This or the window gasket might be your issue since it is gettingthe carpet wet, rather than pooling in the trunk pockets.

Good luck, water leaks suck. Let us know if you find water collecting somewhere to help narrow it down.

      Oh joy! Thanks bmw.

I just replaced the tail light gaskets, I think it was just some leftover swampy ness since the last storm didn't seem to puddle like before. The trunk vets are the things behind the carpet where the jack and battery (if mine was trunk mounted) go that have the sun roof drain tubes in them? Are they easy to access from outside?

Oh great, I did notice some water dripping from the speaker deck, hopefully it was condensation and not a window seal. There was water under the back seat but my daily parking spot is sloped and would make it drain from the trunk to the back seat. Hopefully it's not the window seal.

      Thanks for the help!!

Yum :( I checked when it rains and it's not the new gaskets, luckily.

Trunk seals can be accessed by removing the rear bumper. Its easier on the late models. Just 2 nuts each side to remove the bumper supports from the body, one nut inside the trunk, one under the car on each side. Don't fux around trying to remove the big torx head bolt holding the bumper to the support. Then just slide it out of the side clips.

Another reason I had water under my rear seat was that there is a cover inside of the passenger (right) side wheel well that covers some wires and hoses. It goes from a hole under the rear seat, outside of the car through the wheel well, then back into the trunk. Dumb design. Mine had totally rotted away, letting water spray in the hole when driving in the wet.

My old car was a rust bucket and let water in everywhere. I cut out and welded in patches, fiberglassed, and siliconed everything. I finally solved all the leaks by slamming it into a pole and getting a '91 with no rust.

All my gaskets were new, and my drains were clear and I still had standing water in my trunk. All I had to do was adjust the catch bracket. I personally had to turn the nut 3 times so my trunk sat more flush and tight with the seals.

I need to look into this myself. After a rainstorm, I end up with a damp driverside rear floor and wet trunk. For now I either tarp the rear of the car or put it in the garage when it is supposed to rain. I'm planning to refresh the whole car next winter so I hate to throw $$ into new gaskets that will get wrecked when I strip it down.
