    Rust treatment/prevention

What are you guys using as a rust preventative and or treatment? I have a few spots on my 87 IS and want to tend to it before it becomes an issue. I've heard varying reports regarding POR-15 and wanted to see what you guys like.

MIG welder and an angle grinder.

I have used POR15 on my subframe and sway bars. It is holding pretty well and was done 2 years ago.

How bad is it? Pics help.

Holes, and severe pitting = cut and weld. Surface rust and minor pitting = wire wheel and paint.

I'll take some pics tomorrow and post them up. Mostly it's pitting that I was questioning. The few holes I have (one of the bumper trim tabs for the the US bumpers is rotted) are on my cut and weld list. Thanks for the info!

por15 works if you don't wanna remove all rust. if you're going to remove it all and patch with clean fresh metal then you should go for some epoxy primer and paint. por15 is cool for rust but it doesn't stick to clean metal very well. it's also hard to paint over in my experience.

^I haven't used it, but I've also heard it's a BITCH to remove. I'm thinking good prep work, a primer high in zinc, and paint would be a better solution than POR15.

To be honest, I think putting POR15 over everything is sort of a lazy way of treating rust. Effective, maybe, but there's better options.

I used POR-15 on the frame of my FZJ-80 LandCruiser but that was just to attempt to encapsulate the rust, not to look nice. Thanks for the info

so not to threadjack, but what is the most ideal solution for preventing rust from reforming. Ive got to do some cutting and welding but don't want to do it again later on.

if it is clean and rust free metal, your best bet is a high quaility epoxy primer followed with paint in the proper time interval with good prep.

I have used the spray stuff such as LPS 3 that leaves a waxy coating to prevent rust. I spray it on the undercarriage and into all the closed off areas(bottom of doors through the drain holes etc). They say it is safe on all paints and on rubber and plastic parts.

Boeshield T-9 is a similar product.

Here are a few pics of the issues on my car. There is also a bit of rust at the rear of the front wheelwell near where the fender bolts up. I'm going to cut that out and make a patch, not an issue.

That picture is by the tab on the rear valance where the factory US bumper trim attached. I've installed Euro bumpers so my plan is to cut the tab off, cut out the small amount of rot and weld in a small patch.

This is the one that makes me nervous. It's the seam under the door on the driverside. I'm happy to cut out rotted metal on a flat, non butted area but this is a whole new ballgame. Any insight?

When I restored VW bugs when I was younger, before welding in new metal, I'd spray the cleaned area with a primer that is high in Zinc. You can weld right through a Zinc primer and it galvanizes the area to prevent further rusting from the repair. Usually the issue is that it will rust from the inside out.

Tthe body shop I'm working wih just finished fixing a few spots liked at on my car. Wherever there was a hole, we cut and patched, then primed with POR15. The surface rust was ground off, then POR15'd as well. It's a rust inhibitor, so if any patches are left, it will stop the process.

As soon as I get the car back, I will be painting POR15 underneath every weather seal on the car, even if there isn't any rust present. It's cheap insurance.
