HELP - push rivet for Touring license plate filler

So I broke one of the 3 expanding rivets holding the license plate filler on my 1988 Touring. The rivets are part #4 in the diagram below.

I never would have touched the rivet if I knew that part is (1) Touring specific and (2) NLA from BMW. I'm sure there is no used option, since they break when being removed from the car.

Any ideas where some NOS may be hiding or other options? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks, Cory

That sucks. I looked around for them too and I could not find them. http://www.schmiedmann.com/en has them listed with an out-of-stock message saying they are expected in stock in 7 days (unlikely based on what you have said). How hard would it be to use non-touring parts and either sand them smaller or use electrical tape to enlarge them? Or, contact one of the UK BMW parts salvage guys (sskoda i think is one) and see if they can break them off without breaking them for you.

Thanks! Just for grins, I e-mailed Schmiedmann about the part. They responded and said it is not NLA from BMW, so I ordered 6. We'll see what happens....

Assuming it is really NLA, I'll rig something up. I'll be investing a lot to refurbish this car and just want to keep everything as close to OEM as possible.

Thanks for the update! It is not the first time Schmiedmann has helped me out big time. They have cheap fenders and even the shipping cost to the USA is reasonable.

Let us know if they actually get them for you!

Euro parts show up as NLA to US parts suppliers because of BMW's stupid no Euro parts rule. That's why Schmiedmann can get them because they are in Denmark. Had this happen on several parts for my grey market E34.

Thanks! Great to know, since I will be replacing a rusty fender on my Touring. Did you get a new OEM, new aftermarket, or used fender from them?

The euro part thing is very confusing and getting old after only a month. Some euro-only parts my local dealer can get with no problem. Others they let me order and then call me later to tell me they can't get them. Maximillian is good and very helpful, but the parts take a month to arrive and their web site will let you order NLA parts, so they have to call you later and give you the bad news. I've only had one order arrive from Maximillian so far, and the trim piece was bent and unusable, and the other parts (small plastic clips) were completely missing. Now this with Schmiedmann..... Looks like I may be ordering more from them.

Glad my Touring love is so strong.

My touring never came with a license plate filler and I don't see the benefit of running it other than to trap dirt behind it.

As for getting Euro parts, Blunttech can help or see if a Canadian BMW dealer will ship the item to you.

I replaced mine with large generic push in style clips that can be found at any auto parts store. Was pretty rusty behind it...

Blunt wasn't able to get a few Euro parts for me, but Schmiedmann was able to. I buy everything through Blunt that I can, then look to Schmiedmann.

Received the parts from Schmiedmann today! Order to delivery = 14 days.

Great to know there's a source for factory parts that US dealers and Maximillain can't get.

Well that is good to know for sure. I am still a little surprised that it worked even it was my own suggestion. Im glad to hear it!

Aye, I hadn't realized they were touring specific somehow. I have 3 and they are... somewhat functional at best.

I'll have to email them and try to see what they have.
