to answer your question^, i just actually got done doing mine by taking everything off. it doesn't take to long to take it off, and in my opinion it's worth it. While I was at it, i removed almost everything, all the shadowline, grills and kidney, and side mouldings. When i get my euro mouldings ill paint them with the same paint to match. my problem was that I ordered all the clips the day i was doing it, so my car was without shadowline/trim for a couple of days. the biggest problem i ran into was the top piece that runs along the roof gutter, i bent mine while taking it off and it's very hard to get it back to its original shape. and putting these pieces on is a total $#!@%.

O and as for all the clips, it only cost me $15 shipped including some clips for my side mouldings that I painted at the same time.

    :(^SOLD^:(

the door trim is actaully easy to get off, its the rain gutters that are hard. Im going to just mask it off on the car when i do it on my delphin gray one. but if i do it on my blue one i will probably get a car taht has shadowline from a junkyard and use that and just buff it nice again.

ive found that some good machine polish and a power buffer can restor old faded dull trim to new. If its too bad use a fine cut rubbing compund and it should bring it back. Careful how hard you go its possible to mess it up if you try to hard. Also might be worth it to buff it with some back to black or something along those lines. Havent tried but mgiht work.

I did mine on the car. I prefer to do it that way because its been my experience that once they are off they are difficult to get back on AND stay on.

I've seen two sets of rain gutters fly off after being taken off and put back on. However, I dont believe its the best way because you dont get coverage in some spots and you have to mask really, really well to not get overspray.
