    Front Air Dam painting question

I'm going to add a Front Air Dam from a 1987 IS to my 1988 Lachssilber Cabby, and maybe even a rear lip spoiler as well.

Both are in my possession as is a near-new set of fog lights for the air dam.

The front air dam is, or should I say at one time was Delphin Gray, but the paint is peeling away and looks like hell, but I bought it local and for cheap, so no shipping costs.

I believe the Air Dam is some type of ABS plastic, so I don't want to use a paint remover that is going to melt the plastic.

The paint on the rear spoiler is OK, but still needs a color change to match the Lachssilber.

Anyways, I don't have much (actually any) experience with refinishing and painting these types of panels and doing a search and reading has left me even more confused.

The paint on the front Air Dam doesn't have to look perfect, but I would like to have the colors match as close as possible.

Can someone who has done this link me up?

Like I said, I've done a search and don't have any experience with this so if someone could help me out, it would be much appreciated.

    Thanks very much.

I will post before and afters as well.

When I redid mine (air dam) I sanded it down, until all the peeling paint was feathered, and everything else was roughed up (I think i did it with about 320 grit) then primed and worked my way up.

I tried using air craft stripper on another one that was coated with rubberized under coating (weird), it didn't melt the plastic, but was not really effective.

I will see if I can dig up my process thread.

    Sold it.

      Thanks.

I'm actually half way into the project. I used paint stripper and that removed about 90% of the paint and that shit burns like hell on your skin.

I then sanded down the remaining paint. I then sanded the air dam by hand as smooth as possible, then applied some primer. I will apply another coat of primer, but was wondering if I need to wet sand the primer before applying the paint and I also want to clear coat it.

It does not have to be perfect, as most people won't look at it up close and it will probably get chipped up in no time, but I would like to do a decent job.

I have a rear spoiler to do as well, but unlike the front air dam, the paint is not all peeling and messed up so I will just sand it down, primer it, paint it and clear coat it.

      Thanks for your input.

AH cool, I didn't check the date on the post, or anything.

I wetsanded mine between primer coats, but be careful not to burn through. I did not wetsand between color coats

        Sold it.
