    Under hood padding

Do i need to run it? I know the 318iS had 3 individual smaller padding pieces versus the 325i one that had that one big piece. I took mine off for paint and i don't feeling like putting one back on.:loco: Will my new paint be screwed and if so, does anybody know of some non-oe alternatives?

It keeps the hood from warping from the heat of the engine, I wouldn't run without it. It may not be incredibly apparent if you do drive around without it, but I wouldn't risk it.

I'm sure its rather cheap from the dealer too...

I heard that there is a difference between the early and late model under hood padding. Is this true? I also take it off of every car i have.

since march - been through a hot summer, and 5 hours of idling in bumper to bumper traffic at the border on a 90 degree day.

eh - the paint on my car sucks anyway. it's "good enough" for me, I've given up on keeping a perfect apperance.

                    :giggle:

So all of those cars they build before hood insulation became commonplace had hood warpage? Huh, funny my 1965 Ford truck doesn't have a warped hood, nor does my Austin Mini, both of which are cast iron heat sink engines that produce a ton of temperature.
Nor has the hood of my race car warped since tossing that sheet of useless sound deadening that was screwed to the underside of the hood.
It's to make the car quiet. Has nothing to do with heat.

Oh look, I made your post less douchebag.

Thanks for the honest answer, I learned something today.

Hm, weird, I don't think you'd be able to tell, because the panel gaps are ~5/8" or so on those cars...

                        :nice: jk

LOL, yeah, I'll give you that one. Actually, the panel gaps on the pickup the Mini can only dream about. You want to see shoddy assembly, buy a British car.

Mr M42, at my age I have a low tolerance level for people spouting conjecture as 'fact'. That, coupled with a bottle of delicious beer while posting yesterday, may have been a little more brutal than my usual response. Glad you learned something new. All that weight-adding crap is normal for an 'upscale' car like BMWs that are marketed equally to people with image problems as much as genuine drivers (like us). You need only pop open the hood of a paper-thin hunk of crap like a Metro to see they don't bother with underhood insulation. Keeps costs down, and the thrashing sounds coming from under there are part of the plan to upsell the customer to a Cavalier. ;)

I don't take offense (internet is serious business), thats what I thought was the truth, and you corrected it. No worries.
