    Procedure for repainting a spoiler?

I just got an "is" spoiler in the mail, but it needs to be repainted. What is the proper procudure for doing this (ie painting, sanding, primering, etc.)

I'd like to paint it with the SEM trim paint to match the shadowline that I'll be doing soon, good idea or no?

What all does "Sand, primer, paint" entail? I've never done any sort of painting. I'd like to know specifics such as grit of sand paper and such. I'm not a moron or anything, I'd just like to know if I need to wetsand or drysand and whatnot.

id say go at it with a 200, then 320, then 600 grit to finish it off. clean it real good with some professional (non residue i.e. no soap) cleaner, i just use alcohol instead, then shoot it with 2 coats of primer, then 2 coats of paint, if your doing black paint, i suggest black primer, that's what I did, and everthing turned out great, if it needs touch up, i use a tooth pick, and the same spray paint, dip the pic in a cap with the paint sprayed in it, and apply slowly, works like a charm

Any good sites that sell primer and SEM trim paint?

ken depending on how bad of shape this spolier is, depends on how corse you will have to use the sand paper, start with what dan said and maybe finish up with a 1500, nice and smooth!

200 is probably a little much unless you're taking out some nasty surface imperfections. I'd say 300-400 (wet), prime, 300-400 wet again, then put your finish coat on.

you don't need to sand SEM trim paint, so you might want to use 600 grit on your last coat of primer to smooth out any scratches from the 300 or 400.

There aren't any scratches in the spoiler. Just imperfections in the paint (they're perfectly smooth though). The top part of the spoiler is also VERY faded from the sun. I just want it to look nice again. There aren't any scratches or chips or anything in it.

use 400+, and then wet sand with a 600-800, it will be very nice and smooth.

from the sounds of it, I'd just spend fair bit of time sanding, and dont even use primer.

What if the spoiler is cracked and faded along the top? I'd like to repaint mine too, but I'd like to do body color.

No Primer? Doesn't it promote the adhesion of the top-coat?

the primer can fill the pores and what not in the surface, so it will allow the top coat to go on nicer. However, if the lip is in a nice shape, and you do a good prep job, i'd skip priming.

Also, the lip is located low, and you are bound to get rock chips pretty fast. I myself wouldn't worry about absolute perfection. If anything, I'd throw on a nice coat of clear coat to give it a little bit of protection.

I have an "is" trunk-lit spoiler, NOT the "is" valence lip. The spoiler is made of dense painted foam... the lip is made of plastic.

oops sorry. I thought you were talking about the is valence lip.
Maybe prime would be a good idea then. Either way though, spend some quality time prepping it. Once you throw the primer on, let it dry, and wet sand again if u want it to be nice and perfect.

there was a thread like this a while ago.

I used 3m bumper spray, no primer, no sanding, no cracks or peeling in the last 10 months
